jesse, did you like drums and guns? i thought it was a great return to form after a few middling albums (coinciding with the switch to sub pop), and a great anti-war statement from a religious perspective, but still dark. and that "breaker" video with alan eating cake!

He told me when the master was finished in LA, on the way to the airport, he stopped by a store with stereo equipment.
He slipped the tape into a ghetto-blaster and the kids that were in the store started to ask hundred questions an hour - "what the hell is this?"
He took that to mean this record could actually hold "potential"
[I should dig up the tape of that interview - which stretched on for hours - Laswell also discussed Miles at length and reasons why he didn't get around to working with him....]

Graham, I haven't heard Drums and Guns, though I probably caught tunes from it at their live show last year on the Weisman Museum lawn. Not current with them at all. This live date is excellent, with 2 of my favorite tunes from Things We Lost In The Fire. I like the collab with the Dirty 3 as well.
Sparhawk can really be compelling on guitar.

yeah you should check it out, the production is reeled in from the poppiness of the couple before that. i also saw them at the weisman (inside) probably in 2000 or so, and at orchestra hall in downtown mpls. i like the of all his errant pick/string noises in his playing. haven't heard them with the new bassist, but one of my fav songs "old man song" has great bass playing from zak. from TWLITF i'd go with dinosaur act and laser beam.Jesse wrote:Graham, I haven't heard Drums and Guns, though I probably caught tunes from it at their live show last year on the Weisman Museum lawn. ta Jesse, i of course know Dale's work & John's - in fact i'm just about to head off to estonia for a residency where John is.
It's an interesting label & a fair few names on there that are not the usual suspects - which is good.
