anyone familiar with the rinse fm podcasts? i only listened to one and it was awful (i think some guy named a - plus)...but theres like 20. which ones are good?

i will 2nd zomby hes great. Spliff is pretty much my fav dubstep joint, or atleast the one I have listened to the most.

That's a good one, for sure. I think I like the tracks that sample actual dub or reggae. The original cut that he samples, One Spliff a Day by Billy Boyo (produced by Junjo, my favourite dancehall producer) is superb, especially the extended mix.

i've found Rinse to be better for Funky podcasts, so far--since they have just about all the big'uns doing mixes for them (Perempay, Supa D, Ma1, Marcus Nasty).

as far as dubstep goes, maybe try out Plastician or N-Type? i see Youngsta has one in there right now (a little ways back)... might also be worth a go.

I don't know about their podcasts, but I tend to just download radio sets recommended to me on grimeforum or dissensus. you'd probably enjoy radio rips of mary anne hobbs show on radio 1, she plays a lot of dubstep. Check our her hyperdub showcase

everything i've heard from him to date has been more in the 'dub techno' vein. any recommendations on his more dubstep-y stuff would be great, as he has a fairly sizeable back catalogue.

further on the Rinse tip: i didn't mention Dusk and Blackdown, but of course their show is good. so is the transition show with LD and Chef that's been on lately. and same goes for Anti-Social.

other radio to check out would be the Ruffage and Bruk on SubFM. the fellows seem to be sharing shows a lot lately. the DJs are all interested in dubstep, funky, and various garage forms and bounce between the above at will.

as for recent dubstep faves:

2000F and J Kamata's You Don't Know What Love Is--sharing a 12" on Hyperdub with Joker's Digidesign this month (holy shit). this track is all awesome sunbleached vocoder and sour 80s synth strings--a great great pop song.

also hopefully out on hyperdub some time: Aidy's Girl is a Computer by Darkstar. i get this song way more than last year's Darkstar 12 that everyone was losing their shit for last year.

been listening to a fair amount of older stuff recently.
some of the old DMZ Loefah 12"s are amazing... check out Root... super heavy and "pre-lapsarian wobble" heavy at that!
more on the rolling dark garage becoming dubstep side of things:
Horsepower Productions and other early tempa shit should not be missed. Benny Ill and DJ Dinesh' track London is prolly tops for me, a lot of really amazing breaks drum programming from that era, even if a lot of the stuff wouldn't be immediately recognizable as "dubstep" for someone coming in now and working backwards.

Martyn and Kode9 should both have lps dropping right away, so i'll probably be at this for a while yet.

Yes, but takes more clues from the dancehall side than the tech side of dubstep. the bug's latest album, london zoo, is almost entirely more dancehall oriented tracks, done in a way which is not particularly good as far i can hear

'london zoo' is awesome, though. more dancehall oriented than a lot of other stuff in the dubstep umbrella, but as far as i can tell that umbrella remains pretty ambiguous anyway.

'skeng' is probably the top track off the album and maybe the most dubsteppy

I was totally underwhelmed by London Zoo. Nothing that really stands out beyond a few catchy choruses.

Looking forward to seeing The Bug at Primavera, though, and hopefully they'll crank the sound up. If Warrior Queen's with them then it'll be awesome, I'm sure.

im inclined to agree. i like almost everything he's done before that ive heard, more than that album. like pressure, dem a bomb we, fire, gun disease. i need to give it a few more listens before making my final judgement on it though.

saw him in portland recently and was kinda underwhelmed. played a dj set, and then a set with warrior queen. for the dj set, there was no mixing, no tricky shit; just spinbacks for the transitions. man, that gets old. also played cotti+doctor's 'calm down' as one of the first tracks of his set, when the dj before him had played it near the end of his set; guess he'd been hiding out in the green room. given his behavior during the soundcheck, seemed like he wasnt having the best night, so i guess that's some excuse. the warrior queen set was pretty good though!

mentioned in another thread but the Akira Kiteshi Pinball/NoGlitch Ep is amazing. I'm pretty new to the genre so I've only scratched the surface. I really do enjoy Skreams Midnight Request Line as well..I know it's apparently everywhere but I'm a newbie with this stuff. I picked up the Soul Jazz compilation Box of Dub which has some great tracks.

Checked out Pinch, Ital Tek, Zomby, and Shakleton thanks to this thread as well. Good stuff.
