Flipper
Flipper
for the benefit of Mr. Surfer, in case he doesn't know already, and for any discussion about this great band.
4 reissues out later this month!
Flipper
Sex Bomb Baby [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, US Another essential release from San Francisco legends FLIPPER. Originally released in 1987, 'Sex Bomb Baby' is actually a collection of material dated no later than 1982, comprised of singles, b-sides, & compilation trks. The single version of "Sex Bomb" is an all out clasic - a frenetic, yelping punk answer to "Louie, Louie" & the rest is no slouch either. Outrageous, harsh, sludge-punk from SF's finest. Back in print on CD for the 1st time in yrs!

Flipper
Gone Fishin' [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, US Their 2nd & final studio album for the original lineup of San Francisco's legends FLIPPER. This was released in 1984 & took the "punk" tag to extremes, as no other band in the world was playing punk this slow, sludgy, dark & disturbed. Feat. the haunting "Survivors of the Plague" & the public incrimination of "Sacrifice," 'Gone Fishin' is an art-punk classic that holds up alongside their more heralded debut.

Flipper
Public Flipper Limited Live 1980-1985 [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, US 2CD collection that was originally released in 1986 as a 2LP of live material culled from 1980-85. The sound quality & playing are both a grimy, distorted mess, which suits the band just fine. Always alternating between endearing & abrasive FLIPPER left no room for the middle ground of "like." The album title is a shot at John Lydon & his alleged plagiarism of Flipper's artwork for his own PIL & it proves that the band was never opposed to alienating its audience, no matter how sanctified. Harsh, art-rock classics from one of San Francisco's most important post-hippy era bands.

Flipper
Album - Generic Flipper [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, US 1st classic record from the legendary San Francisco act, originally released in 1982. Post-hardcore? Post-punk? Art-rock? Despite being a part of SF's punk scene FLIPPER were really only punk in spirit, eschewing conventions & making no concessions. Sludgy, distorted, atonal, noise rock jams that sound as urgent & heavy as they must have 25 yrs ago. A huge influence on bands to come later like Nirvana & The Melvins.

Re: Flipper
I've had Generic on LP since the late 80s and still play it regularly. A+++
Re: Flipper
yeah, I have CDs of Generic and Sex Bomb Baby, I'm curious how the other two compare (I'll probably just DL them first and see for myself, but any opinions in the meantime are welcome).
Re: Flipper
Hahahaha.
I actually only have Generic, so if any of those other ones are worth having, someone please let me know.
People who like that vibe might want to check out Pissed Jeans, cant vouch for the new one Hope For Men (though I've been meaning to pick it up) but their first album Shallow is great and very Flipper-esque.

I hear Hank Paulson is a big fan of "Livin' For The Depression".

Ha!
I think I'm definitely up for Public Flipper Limited. I wonder if the "Tour the nation with Flipper" game is going to come with it? I don't see how they'd do it though..

I saw 'em here with Husker Du, probably 25 years ago. Incredibly sloppy, drunken show, didn't do much for me. Generic is the one worth having.

Re: Flipper
I have found Flipper to be vastly overrated. The Negative Trend EP is one of my favourite records, though...

Re: Flipper
Can't wait to finally get a real copy of Generic, and I'll probably pick up Gone Fishin' and maybe Sex Bomb Baby as well. Not sure about the live stuff as I haven't liked most of what I've heard.

There's been quite a stream of live Flipper on Dime recently which you might still catch.
10 or so 80s sets.
Re: Flipper
I always loved the others. Probably preferred Gone fishin to Generic in fact. One By One is about my fav track by them. & Sex Bomb Baby has both Ha Ha & Love Canal and 2 or 3 other near classics including the single of the title track which is a different recording to the Generic version.surfer wrote:Hahahaha.

Loved some of PFL too. The bits that got most out there.

Re: Flipper
This is good news. I can stop wearing out my singles. Luckily I have multiple copies. Love Canal/Ha Ha Ha was one of the first hardcore singles I ever bought when I was a wee bairn, though it was only tangentially related to hardcore which is what made it so fucking great. When I got Sex Bomb/Brainwashed I knew I was onto something. Both sides were utterly incredible. In completely different ways, it was like, art, maaan. When Album came out it only solidified their genius. They were heavy, grungy and flying in the face of the times when bands were fighting for the speed crown. Life is the only thing worth living for indeed. I loved their massive one chord zen stupidity. I didn't dig Gone Fishin' too much and didn't pay much attention to anything after that. I saw them live in '83 or '84 and it was pretty good though some crazy ass English-style punk was crashing the crowd and bashed into a buncha people one of which was my girlfriend and I lit into him. Though he started it, the bouncers figured that since I had the upper hand that I needed to go too. Ahh, the misty colored memories of the way we were.
To a kid that thought "Damaged II" was the best thing on Black Flag's "Damaged", Flipper were the fucking tonic. While waiting for Gira to get the Swans up to snuff, and for Big Black, Butthole Surfers, Drunks with Guns, Killdozer, and all the rest that followed with heavy guitar noise to get going; there was Flipper.
Funny thing is I can still remember the moment I heard Neil Young's "Hey, Hey, My, My(Into the Black). I went out and bought that record immediately and was totally bummed out that the rest of the record wasn't based on that crunching guitar sound. When I started listening to Flipper I knew I'd found home.

Re: Flipper
I had heard rumors of these reissues, but no confirmation, so thank you!
It actually kinda warms my heart to see that at least a few IHMers appreciate Flipper.
yeah!

Re: Flipper
Y'know..In'77 I kept hearing about all this punk rock stuff and I just couldn't wait to hear it. I thought it was going to be something totally transgressive. Something earth shaking...Then I heard the Sex Pistols ( a twelve inch 45 of God Save The Queen..I played it at 33 for a week until I realized my mistake ) and it just seemed like only a step removed from Chuck Berry..
I was very disappointed.
When Flipper came around it was " Yeah..this is how it is supposed to be.."
Here's Flipper in ( for them ) an sober moment..

here's another...It actually kinda warms my heart to see that at least a few IHMers appreciate Flipper.
yeah!
I was really into hardcore 10-15 years ago, both the contemporary scene and the old stuff, but no one ever mentioned Flipper.. I discovered them just a couple of years ago through the American Hardcore book.... Another weird or "anti"-band I read about there was NoTrend, but I haven't heard them yet. Are they any good?
Re: Flipper
yeah, they are. i have only heard a little bit, but there are one or two comps in print, and you can find some articles online. more kinda weird and self-consciously aimed at audience-annoyance. i heard a few things that are a bit like flipper with more obvious punk-rock-audience-baiting. i believe i read about a later incarnation with saxes or something. always meant to investigate no trend more, actually.David wrote:here's another...It actually kinda warms my heart to see that at least a few IHMers appreciate Flipper.
