besides from PA's lounge, and the occasional kick ass indie act to roll into town like fuck buttons, mogwai this month (i think) and dinosaur jr, built to spill, and others next month, what other venues might hold music such as experimental or jazz/improv? I know in terms of stores and buying music there's twisted village in cambridge, and Mimaraglu (sorry about the spelling) and the brainwaves fest. is there a toddpnyc type page for boston? thankz

I'm coming to Boston tomorrow, hopefully be able to catch the wooden wand show. but how does one get around at night after the show, doesn't the subway service end at like midnight or something?
Re: The Boston Music Scene
here's a nice old thread to dredge up and make a post about a show.
saturday night at the goethe center in boston, on a mild night with only a modest amount of snow:
howie stelzer played first, with a selection of hand-held tape recorders playing/recording looped tapes. the first section was focused on the raw and rough texture of the tapes themselves, sort of a live collage with a very slow build. the sound was continuous but somehow seemed to be in parts, with a second part that was thicker and more complex and a last part that was full noise, heavy but not terribly loud.
blevin blectum played next, accompanied by videos that were mostly abstract, shapes and kaleidoscope patterns. her music as closer to her old electronic material than i expected, beat-driven and jumpy but with a certain sense of humor to it. the first piece featured voice heavily, and on a couple of occasions something recongizable vocal bubbled up. lots of interesting textures and rhythms, nicely matched to the visuals. there was a long home-video section that departed from the visual abstraction, two little girls playing in some sort of two-person costume, connected by cloth. it was more disconcerting than the abstraction, but probably in a good way.
and then finally jeff witscher as rene hell. he sat to the side, giving the stage over to the screen. his performance was loosely separated into movements or perhaps separate pieces linked sonically but each with a different thematic video. the music was along the lines of vanilla call option - sputters of laptop synthesis, sometimes with traces of rhythm or meter, sometimes sliding through moments of melody. the visuals were very much in line with the rene hell/salon records aesthetic, simple geometries superimposed over abstract or surreal imagery. one of the figures from the album art work appeared in part of a piece. overall i found the visuals to be an excellent supplement to the msuic, completing it without explaining or simplifying.
overall an excellent night of music, and well worth marching through slush.

*Bump*
I'm making the move from Amherst to Boston. Can anyone here post updated links to concert listings, book stores, stuff to do in the city? So mad at myself for missing Jason Kahn play.

Re: The Boston Music Scene
since the last update regarding venues in this thread was a few years ago, i'll also add:
deep thoughts (in jamaica plain): record store and venue owned and operated by dude behind one kind favor/guerrilla toss/cave bears etc; several events every month, usually $5, often featuring local vernacular artists
out of the blue too (central square, cambridge): gallery space with frequent shows (there's a 40+ band fest coming up in march i think?)
washington st art center (somerville): usually booked by sam who runs ydlmier records (and is maybe on this board?); mostly eai and noise; friendly crowd

Actually, Sam books shows there only once or twice a year. This venue is booked by Morgan Evans-Weiler, Jesse Collins, and me. But thanks for the shout-out.smorriswhite wrote:
