Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

Yes, it's a genre. The lessons have a liturical origin in the Lamentations (adopted by the Catholics), and they were sung at some point before Easter. They became exceptionally popular, even a fad, and formed an important social "scene" for the aristocracy. The darkness of the title was emphasised by the extinguishing of candles during the singing until the church is left in darkness. There's plenty of other composers who tried their hand at writing them in the early 1700s, but the one most remembered today is by Couperin. It's a staggering piece, alternating free-flowing lines of single Hebrew letters (in archaic style) with the texted parts (in modern style). Both Couperin's and Charpentier's Leçons should be easy to find in Harmonia Mundi's budget range (those white digipacks), both recommended. Outside France, Carlo Gesualdo wrote a set of lessons; and the English composer Tallis set the Lamentations.

Incidentally, Herzog uses the Couperin piece to great effect in Fata Morgana, and later he used the title for one of his documentaries (the burning oil wells one). This is the section from the opening of the Couperin piece that Herzog used:

2008-live recording by The Breeders. They really had their moments on the early 90s CDs, but this is not so great.

When I see posts listing numerous items in this thread, I always imagine that stuff gets listened to all at the same time.

Luigi Nono La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura (Kaïros)

Beautiful, especially the "Leggio III"...

before that I had:

Masahiko Togashi / Masahiko Sato Kaïros

also a wonderful album. One of my favourites from the japanese free-jazez scene. At least one where the japanese prysm works best. As if jazz was an influence on Japanese music and not the other way round.

Next I'll play:

Joji Yuasa Aoi no Ue (Omega Point) Incredibla collage of voices from the nô theatre made after John Cage visited Japan. I'd say the same thing than for Kaïros. Very original, and to think of the time it took to do it with tapes ! There's a nice chapter about Yuasa in Cope's Japrocksampler book.. The most interesting part of the book IMO.

=> all in all a good day !

I really like this CD, particularly the titular track which has the shaking itself apart sound of a Tinguely sculpture and Appearance, (performed by Cage and Tudor) which has a lot of crazy, electronic noise. Great stuff.

I also have vol 8: Electric Field which is Toshi Ichiyanagi improvising on prepared piano while the sound was modulated by live electronics. It's pretty good, if not as raw and immediately engaging as his 60s work. It flirts at times with a hint of New Agey-ness but thankfully sidesteps it. I should play it again soon, it's a nice peice.

I was just wondering if you thought the recording was done well because I have some crappy mp3s of it and they don't sound that great.
