piano. I'm no expert but I understand there was a long "trend" of "authentic" playing on the clavecin and piano was kind of looked down on... perhaps f&p can tell us what's what ?

Alexandre Tharaud also plays Ravel beautifully IMHO.

There is a beautiful piece by Porpora called "Leçons de Ténèbres". Is it related? Coincidence? Or is "Leçon de Ténèbres" a generic term ???

Yes, it's a genre. The lessons have a liturical origin in the Lamentations (adopted by the Catholics), and they were sung at some point before Easter. They became exceptionally popular, even a fad, and formed an important social "scene" for the aristocracy. The darkness of the title was emphasised by the extinguishing of candles during the singing until the church is left in darkness. There's plenty of other composers who tried their hand at writing them in the early 1700s, but the one most remembered today is by Couperin. It's a staggering piece, alternating free-flowing lines of single Hebrew letters (in archaic style) with the texted parts (in modern style). Both Couperin's and Charpentier's Leçons should be easy to find in Harmonia Mundi's budget range (those white digipacks), both recommended. Outside France, Carlo Gesualdo wrote a set of lessons; and the English composer Tallis set the Lamentations.

Incidentally, Herzog uses the Couperin piece to great effect in Fata Morgana, and later he used the title for one of his documentaries (the burning oil wells one). This is the section from the opening of the Couperin piece that Herzog used:
