+1 on the Leonard Cohen

It's not perfect all the way through, but Songs of Love and Hate is about as brooding as you can get (1st track, Avalanche, especially). My favorite is Songs From a Room though.

I've only heard the excerpt of Lucy Song, but yeah I can see how that can be one for wallowing.
oh i admit to not seeing the wallowing part of the first post. maybe because i never do that.
I was going to be a neo-deconstructivist but mom wouldn't let me.

whenever i'm actually sad-sad, i tend not to want to listen to anything.

when i'm mad-sad, however, i end up listening to a lot of shellac/big black/rapeman. something about steve albini appeals to my sense of powerless-white-nerd irritation.

i'm very rarely ever "down", but if i happen to be at sometime soon, i think 1/1 from music for airports will do me well.

id say its pretty hard to go past some of the more depressing songs by The Smiths.
"I know its over" is a prime example. i challenge anyone to listen to that song and stay cheerful.

i always thought that was kind of a happy song. it's kind of fun right?

ANOTHER RAINY DAY IN MANCHESTER

Oh God I feel so miserable
My whole damn life's unbearable
Think I'm going to kill myself today
I couldn't get much worse
I think I'll have another cup of tea first

And I can't believe
How grim my life is
There's no food in my fridge
I'll stay in bed all day and watch TV
Oh 'Mary, Mungo and Midge'

I would go out tonight
But I haven't got a thing to wear
Once I had a job
Then I found a job
And then I had two jobs

I'm sure I could be a soap opera star
In 'Coronation Street'
Star with Vera Duckworth and Rita in the Kabin
And what's my chance if I act anything like I sing?
Hand in glove
The sun shines out of my behind

It's just another rainy day in Manchester
It's always raining
And I'm so miserable
And I've never been laid
And we've just signed to EMI
Cos we'll never get a number one on Rough Trade

It's just another rainy day in Manchester
Another rainy day in Manchester
It's always raining
I was going to be a neo-deconstructivist but mom wouldn't let me.

Speaking of Manchester: I'll add Joy Division and New Order.

For Joy Division:
Closer
Unknown Pleasures
Parts of JD's Substance can be powerful as well: "Atmosphere" immediately followed by "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on the JD - Substance CD have a strong 1-2 punch of sadness.

For New Order:
Movement
Power, Corruption & Lies
Just like their former group, the members of NO deliver both melancholy and frustration. I would say that Movement seems to contain the most concentrated form of this. Power, Corruption & Lies has "Leave Me Alone" that is definitely meant for feeling down.

edit: oops, Paul C already mentioned Closer on the first page.

no way man, its a song about a guy who is totally unable to establish any kind of connection with anyone. it is far from happy.

amen brother, "Atmosphere" and "Love will tear us Apart" are a pretty potent combination, for extra effect i recommend listening to "No Love Lost" right after. It tends to give it a bit of a kick.
