I know, sounds like an odd pairing, right?

But....

And also a very brief clip of Pinhas playing in Detroit.

i don't think i've ever actually enjoyed any pinhas. i've heard a couple of things on cuneiform, but they've never left an impression. hrm.

I like Heldon quite a lot. He could be a really noisy bastard in that context. Pinhas's solo stuff? A mixed bag. Some of it's quite good, but the spoken word stuff and when he ( ahem ) "rocks out" , well, it's a bit of a hurdle I would admit.

Merzbow too? Hmmm..

i'm a big Heldon fan- and Pinhas too, but i haven't enjoyed anything he's done since 1982

mudd- for Pinhas, you might like "chronolyse", "rhizosphere" or "iceland"- i can't picture you enjoying the more song-based "east west" or "l'ethique" but you never know...

I don't think I've ever actually enjoyed any Wolf Eyes. They seem to be overhyped. Also they've probably made about 14 albums in the past week. They seem to be the Interpol of their scene. In other words, they're really into their image. Wearing leather jackets with metal studded leather bracelets. Yeah brutal stuff.

you don't seem to be particularly familiar with wolf-eyes, etbtc. not that i'm suggesting you should be, but maybe you should avoid that particular tone.

i'm not familiar with heldon, what are they like?

and carlos, i'll give those first couple a listen, since most of the stuff i've heard is from the relatively recent cuneiform releases. i don't know what's reissue and what's new material, though.

i really love "event and repetitions"; its almost an entirely atmospheric record that will almost surely appeal to fans of early T-Dream and some of Fripp's stuff. his last double album is certainly a mixed bag...some of it i think is really great; some of the stuff (primarily with percussion) loses me a bit.

curious to hear this collab.

this statement almost feels like anachronism

If I'm not mistaken.. Nate Young's synth project Demons either recently opened for or played a show with Pinhas. I know Dilloway is a big fan and carries a bunch of his stuff on his distro. Doesn't come as as big of a surprise to me as say.. the Victo Braxton collaboration did..

You're right. I apologize for the tone. You're also right about me not being as familiar as I should be with Wolf Eyes before even being able to make such a statement. I am really only familiar with their album Human Animal. Maybe I was expecting too much from it after reading so much hype about Wolf Eyes.

Rich, concering the anachronism, I think you're refering to remark I made about WE making 14 albums in a short amount of time. I was really just poking fun at the Wolf Eyes gang for the amount of material they've made in such a short amount of time. I'm usually not into musicians that are so prolific because the quality can and often does suffer.

Stating the obvious here, but they've been around in one form or another for nearly a decade. "Hype" is the anachronism, as they've long since established themselves with quality records, endless touring, and numerous side projects (Wire cover story in Nov 2004). As for image, bah, they're pretty much exactly as they present themselves, i.e. noise as party music, John Olson is about as down to earth a person as they come. Comparisons to Interpol regarding image or any other criterion border on incoherent, imho.

Okay. It's apparent that I know very little about Wolf Eyes. I apologize for my bold, ignorant statements.

I guess all I should say is 1.) Wolf Eyes is not my favorite noise-esque group of musicians. 2) I was expecting to enjoy Human Animal more than I do.

Fair enough, etbtc.

In case you're curious, there's a thread in the IHM archives on Wolf Eyes with info & recs:

Don't sweat it, ebtc, people step on their dicks all the time on these boards. You're off the mark concerning a band, fer crissakes, not essential epistemology.
