I take a back seat to nobody in the category of Goodellspeak hatred; in fact I'm the only one who has been posting on the Facebook "I Hate Roger Goodell" page which that twat Zuckerberg was probably urged to de-emphasize or suffer some ad revenue loss. According to Sal Paolantonio Kraft and his minions are still furious of pudgy Roger over Deflategate and since Kraft is on the committee that sets his salary, this could get interesting.

Ironically enough, it is on a football thread where I can also offer my input on the only other subject I'm intensely familiar with.

Look, the first time I was arrested was at the age of 13. Unfortunately enough, it's the only time in my life I was arrested, charged, and convicted for something I didn't do. And only those who saw me write about that experience at jazztalk will comprehend how militantly bitter I remain about that to this day. But, from that point until I was 20, I was either locked up, or on probation. And all throughout I had loving and caring relatives and friends who went to bat for me at every fucking turn.

Net result? I took advantage of that shit until the goddamn cows came home. Lapping up everyone telling me how smart I was, and all that kind of horseshit. Found myself somehow "above" all the other hapless pieces of shit I did time with. And that's what kept me in that cycle of shit.

If someone had simply fucking given me the REAL story, I'd likely have broken that cycle a hell of a lot earlier than I did. I needed a serious dose of reality, not a bunch of relatively soft landings.

Josh Gordon needs some fucking reality. And a lot of it, now. Not some soft landing in the CFL.

I see a good cat in there. Just like everyone saw in me. The sooner he is brought to his senses via tough love, or simply don't give a fuck cold hard reality, the better.

the thing that's so tricky about the superathletic WRs in the NFL is that they pretty much all seem to be lunatics of one variety or another. you can dump your resident lunatic like SEA did with Harvin and try to go without, but I bet there's no way Butler muscles through Harvin on that last play. losing Tate and then Harvin from last year's team seemed to become a big factor in these last two games, amazing in a way they were close in either.

which isn't to say that I really have an opinion on Josh Gordon, except that it's such a shame that someone who put up a 2013 like he did might essentially be done after that. he's looking like the Joltin' Joe Charboneau of WRs (sorry Cap).

yep, I said the same thing a few pages back. if they're going to do that, I'd like to see owners tested and suspended for alcohol also, of course for the good of the sport.

So what we seem to know about Josh Gordon is that he smokes pot and occasionally drinks alcohol. And for this his career is being ruined? It makes no sense whatsoever, nor does all the hand-wringing about how he's "destroying" himself. The more I think about it, the more the public letter he wrote about this makes more sense than anybody else who has talked about it.

That's the real scandal here...that a gifted athlete has had two years of his career taken away for basically no good reason other than the draconian rules the NFL put in place. Given the very small window that players have to earn money from this game, it really makes me despise the league. And yeah, you can say that given the same circumstances, what Gordon did is incredibly stupid. Okay, sure. But it's only stupid because of the context of these punishments that were invented by a league that has zero credibility.

The players need to start their own league or something. The NFL should be destroyed, burned to the ground.

Well, David. I'm really glad that you are able to walk on water and have divorced yourself from, and risen above the society in which most of the rest of us live in.

But you see, in reality there exists these pesky little things we like to refer to as rules. Especially in the workplace. And in order to maintain a working position to provide income to support yourself and/or family, you have to adhere to those rules, no matter how "stupid" you find them. If you choose to stop adhering to those rules, you'll find yourself on the outside looking in.

And in many cases, as we've seen ample evidence of, what then happens is a turn towards the life of crime. It's the last viable option for those who have made themselves unemployable by assuming they are exempt from rules like you do. And if you don't think that ruins lives, then you are a very ignorant person.

Oh, and that NFL that you want to burn down? Keep in mind that they often shield their players from the criminal justice system. You know where I work, David? I work for a local substance abuse rehab, with both inpatient and outpatient. When folks are popped for multiple DUI's (because, you know, DUI's tend to keep funeral homes hopping), and they are mandated into a program, they are give breathalyzers each and every time they come in for treatment/counseling. You know what happens if they are caught with an illegal limit? Let's just say their next ride is free, and they aren't going back home.

Is Gordon going to jail for failing a breathalyzer?

Yes, burn it down, because rules are stupid.

I feel like this has been discussed ad nauseum here but my opinion is that:

1. Pro sports leagues should only test athletes for PED's.
2. I have no sympathy for athletes who violate what I think are bad rules (non-PE drug testing) and get punished when they are caught.

I think some rules that my employer enforces are senseless. That doesn't give me license to ignore them. And if I ever chose to, I would have no choice but to accept the consequences.

The NFL is far from the only employer who has drug and alcohol guidelines. Bartenders can cut guys off when they get too hammered even though they're old enough to buy alcohol. Gordon's on field behavior this past season was not one of somebody who was capable of doing his job in ways that were felt to be acceptable. I have a hard time believing any other large employer would act otherwise,
