I am trying to imagine how hideous a blowout that game would have been if the Rod was still stalking the sidelines ogling cheerleaders; apparently there are still more than a few vestigial remains of his defense suiting up for games - the one picture I saw in the Glob had a Bama WR at least ten yards behind one of the Michigan CBs (and to my surprise is wasn't JT Floyd).

Fortunately I was en route to NH last night to climb Mt. Eisenhower with Mrs. T and the Trickettes today (the oldest has taken advantage of a week and a half of HS soccer practice to lead the entire way both up and down the hill) so I managed to miss the entire game. My only problem with this is that they'll drop back behind State in the polls and have to wait until they kick Sparty's ass back to East Lansing to leapfrog them. Argh.

Welcome to the SEC Mizzou. The Razorbacks will get slattered in conference play after that fine performance against Looziana-Monroe (great win for them btw). If the Big 10 only played non-conference games, would any team be bowl eligible? Noj has to be happy at the Bruin rapid recovery program. Wow. Syracuse had a flurry of activity against U$C that made it look like they might give them a game; then the Trojans started getting serious.

I don't think you'll find Cane gear being heavily promoted since they already look like garbage before the sanctions hit. The Penn State Hoo game was one of the worst college games I've ever endured even if it did have a great ending.

Mora, Spanos, and Mazzone have this UCLA team playing far above expectations already. The Bruins' redshirt freshman QB Hundley is savvy, athletic, and has nice touch on his throws. RB Jonathan Franklin should be a Heisman candidate if he continues at this rate. I hope this team can keep it rolling!

As an aside, the Nebraska Cornhuskers sure travel deep. The Rose Bowl had a ton of red in it.

Still withholding judgment on the Sons of Schembechler. The Air Force offense had possession of the ball for about 115% of the game on Saturday; I've seen comments saying the defense had the wrong guys keying on elements of the triple option. So maybe it's that, and not general defensive suckage. I hope.

UMass is on the slate for next week (after drawing 16,000 for their first game at Foxboro, ~100 miles away from Amherst, ROFLMFAO) and they flat out suck, so I'm thinking the score is going to have to be at least 56-0 for me to take these guys seriously this year.

If ever a 37-6 win could feel like a loss, it was UCLA's win over Houston. It was a sloppy regress from the poised, gritty win over Nebraska a week prior. Lots of mistakes by the Bruins which a better team would capitalize on. An ugly game, but I guess a win is a win.

As far as the Trojans go...their defense has looked shaky. Not going to win a national title without great defense. And I think the Cardinal are still a pretty damn good team, particularly on the defensive side of the ball where they were getting to Barkley often. At least that's what I was able to catch before going into the Rose Bowl.

The badly stumbling Badgers benched O'Brien for the second half and went to a Tomczak-era Bear offense of run-run-run to eke out a home win against Utah State. Should have been a loss, but the State kicker shanked one at the end.

No word on who's starting this week yet. O'Brien got in stir for a couple of sack fumbles and bad interceptions.

Former Michigan State football coach John L. Smith has $25.7 million in liabilities against only $1.2 million in assets, most of which is tied up in retirement funds, according to bankruptcy documents filed Wednesday in federal court.

The documents detail the grave financial problems facing Smith, the Arkansas coach who filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy Sept. 6.

In the court filing, he listed just $300 in cash on hand and $500 in his checking account.

Smith estimates the only real property he owns as worth $2,000 from a "1/4 interest in deceased parents real estate -- 8 acres in Iona, Idaho, worth $8,000 (total)."

Smith, 63, publicly disclosed in July that he faced financial problems stemming from real estate investment losses he suffered when he was head coach at Louisville in 1998-2002.

The latest court filing shows the extent of those difficulties and come during a turbulent time for Smith, whose team was viewed as a national title contender in the preseason but is 1-2 and unranked after two embarrassing losses: to Louisiana-Monroe in overtime on Sept. 8 and a 52-0 lambasting at home by Alabama last week.

With lots of mistakes and multiple dropped passes the Bruins fell back to earth and lost to the Beavers. Without key offensive lineman Jeff Baca UCLA couldn't find running room. Senior defensive back Sheldon Price played like a freshman and got burned for most of the Beavers' big plays. Oregon State is well-coached and their junior QB is pretty damn good.
