Midway through the second half of Florida International’s 81-49 loss at Tulsa on Sunday, Thomas motioned toward his counterpart as if to ask when he’d take his starters out.

A few minutes later, he got vocal with his request, shouting a few words in the direction of Golden Hurricane coach Doug Wojcik.

At that point, FIU (0-3) was down 63-25 with 8:59 to play after being outscored 27-5 to start the second half.

“It’s a 40-minute game. If you want the truth of it, go back to the (North) Carolina game Monday night, when Carolina was pressing them with 3 minutes left,” Wojcik said, referring to FIU’s 88-72 loss at North Carolina. “I don’t press, and I don’t embarrass anybody. But it’s a 40-minute game, and I’m in this game to get better.

“I’ve never seen anything like that. It was very bizarre.”

Wojcik, who was putting leading scorer Ben Uzoh back into the game, looked back at Thomas and shrugged his shoulders. He pulled 7-footer Jerome Jordan shortly thereafter and Uzoh with more than 5 minutes remaining. He had emptied his entire bench with 3 minutes left.

Wojcik explained that he had only eight scholarship players available, with Glenn Andrews out with a knee injury and Bishop Wheatley serving a four-game suspension. Two other players are sitting out under NCAA transfer rules, and Wojcik is redshirting another.

“There’s 10 minutes left in the game and, to be honest with you, I only have so many guys,” Wojcik said.

Got a chance to see Bucky "open the season" against East Cupcake, er, Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne last night.

The kids on the road were struck by the flu, injury and suspension. Men vs. boys.

Still, the 6-10 Leuer has improved his footwork and could be the guy down low Wisconsin needs to offset the losses of Krabbenhoft and Marcus Landry. Trevon Hughes has another year under his belt. The swing offense works if the players have faith, and Ryan assures they have faith.

They're being picked toward the bottom of the Big Ten. Bo will still get them to the dance.

And I have a new favorite player, No. 5, red-shirt froshie swingman Ryan Evans from Phoenix. He's 6-6, can fly and is rocking the Scottie Pippen fade haircut.

I think UCLA will make it (although its nice to see them have a down year), but the Pac-10 might only get 3 teams in: Cal, Washington, ????

Watch out for Jerome Randle, he's going to be the Pac-10 POY, a legit Monta Ellis type player with range, iirc.

The Bruins have one kid who has some sick handles and athleticism but really raw (Lee), a couple kids who can stroke it from three (Dragovic & Roll), then a bunch of nondescript goons underneath with really ugly post game. Last night's double OT loss to Cal State Fullerton showed a team with no offensive or defensive identity, and I didn't see the potential for it to become much of a threat. The default offense was pass the ball around until somebody chucks up a three.

No joy on Mount Shittany as the toothless Lions get beat by a UNC-Wilmington team that lost 25 games last season.

Well, my Heels got spanked by Syracuse last night, after surviving a late-game surge from Ohio State Thursday night. They look to have lots of potential talent, but I'm not sure they were a #4 team coming into this mini-tournament, frankly.

Ugh, I guess I should take some solace in the Cuse doing well without that douche Devendorf but I don't for obvious reasons. They dispatched Cal pretty handily which didn't come as any great surprise. I'm sure the Holes losing early will produce a "teachable moment" for Roy to tell his youngsters they've got a long way to go.

I'm usually not very optimistic at this time of the year in recent years but I think this will be the most enjoyable Terp team since 2003.

Hey what did I say not three months ago Stephen? Returning ACC seniors, no other way to slice it.
