Tyson Gay ran a (American record) 9.71 today in Berlin and got CRUSHED. Usain Bolt isn't human. 9.58. Wow.

He took .11 off his own record, the biggest improvement in the 40+ years since they started electronic timing.

A year ago that would have been the world record, and he was supposedly running with a pulled groin or something. Anyway, Bolt's time is about what he would have done in Beijing if he had run hard the whole way.

What Bolt is doing is just unheard of. It's staggering. He's a runner from like 10 years into the future. It's one thing to best a record incrementally like usual, but he is just crushing. WOW! And everyone swears he is clean. How can a guy 6'5" some 200 lbs run like that? That's incomprehensible.

Additionally: His name is up there with Utah Kawasaki .... i mean the dude's name is Bolt!

This is pretty weird. I would kind of be surprised if this happened. I think 700m is still too short of a distance. Bolt would barely need to adjust his training, while Bekele would have to completely change his. Bolt probably does maybe 30 miles a week, while Bekele is probably doing 120 miles a week.

Age is definitely a factor in this as well, with Bolt being 4 years younger.

The only way Bekele would win would be to set a blazing fast past from the beginning in order to kill Bolt's kick in the last 100-200m.

It's an interesting idea though. One of those what-if pairings that are fun to think about.

I think 700m is still too short of a distance.

I've been thinking about this more today. I think the distance may in fact be more fair than I thought at first. I can't seem to make up my mind on the matter. Bekele may still be too old. It would be even more difficult to predict a winner if this were against Bekele from 4-6 years ago.

Bekele also thinks the two could meet around that distance.

Cuba's 19-year old world long jump champion jumped 28’11.63” yesterday in Stockholm, the longest jump since 1995. Almost jumped out of the pit, they'll need to lengthen them for this guy.

Amazing! Thanks, Antoine! The sport gets so little coverage in the states I might have missed these. Never knew Kipchoge had an unofficial sub 2:01! When I was a kid, they were trying to break 2:20!

I've gotten to watch more of the sport this year. The Olympic Channel has been showing all the Diamond League meets, and I've watched them all.
