Following a 4-0 win yesterday, Tuchel has been fired. Rumors announce Pochettino as the next PSG coach...
Yeah I just saw that, wish Poch all the best in the world, PSG has been his dream job and I'm glad his patience has paid off. Antoine I've been keeping one eye on Ligue 1 but havent watched any matches this year. Does Lille seriously have a chance to win the league? How do you think the table will shake out? Also interested in your thoughts on Andre Villas-Boas as a manager, I thought he was one of the worst managers Spurs have had, and he flamed out at Chelsea too. Zenit was not a good barometer.

Wow Renato Sanches plays for Lille? Ha I remember him when he was loaned to Swansea, he put in some absolutely awful appearances, embarrassing even. I think I even posted about it here. Good for him to reinvent himself and apparently has been good this year. Great talent

Well I don't follow Ligue 1 that much, I think I saw something like 3 or 4 games, but at least there's a little more suspense than in the recent years (though if PSG plays at the expected level, there shouldn't be a lot).
Lille has just been sold, so we'll see how this owner change will affect them. Meanwhile, Marseille looks quite erratic...
But the main event is probably the Mediapro affair, with probable huge impacts on the clubs.

oh shit that's right, I forgot about that. Julian Laurent was explaining it on a podcast. I kind of spaced out, but I guess the league awarded a tv contract to a company with about 400K subscribers that bid way above its ability to deliver? Is there going to be a yard sale in the transfer market in January?

They were new on the french market, so they started with 0 subscribers. Their bid was indeed really high and it seems they gave nice bonuses to the top execs (ahem). Oh and they already had this kind of behaviour in Italy. It was doomed since day 1.
So now they're out and of course the historical bidders are going to negotiate lower prices with a desperate league... Considering it's the main revenue for the clubs, I don't know if there's going to be massive sales or lower wages or bankruptcies. And it's not like the stadiums were full of people.

Arteta seems to have stabilized the ship for now. They have huge long term problems with that squad but Kroenke doesnt care.

Completed a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle today on the coffee table in front of the tv with the Spurs game on. Started it on Wed during the cup tie, finished it today. Of course watching the match is completely out of the question.

(so much for the cl season ... it'd still be fun if one could go to the stadium)
Drawing Liverpool is not the worst.
come again?
Another draw with West Brom. Big Sam absolutely owns Liverpool. He's won more points at Anfield since April 2017 than all 'big six' teams combined.

Spurs v Fulham postponed. Not sure if PL is going to continue the season or take a break.

Meanwhile another day another Liverpool draw, this time against Newcastle. Liverpool has a lot of issues breaking down organized teams. Its not just parking the bus although Newcastle and West Brom do a fair share of that. Title race is still Liverpool's to lose but its now wide open. If Rats can be disciplined defensively and counterattack intelligently they could win. Not make stupid giveaways in bad areas, and finish clinically. Lutz you may bemoan their mental fragility but Liverpool are not exactly full tank of confidence right now either. and Rats will be better rested.

liverpool are doing their best to kindle hope, but i'm not falling for it ... that second half was largely an invitation to crumble and rats are more talented but much less sturdy than their ex-boss's team

in other news, there recently was an article on the guardian about werner being wasteful ... no shit, sherlock ... it's not about positioning either, werner needs chaos to really thrive, and once lampard started making a more ordered team out of chelsea after a fun start to the season, werner as expected did not look so good anymore

Ralph dropped to his knees in gratitude or exhaustion at the final whistle.

Showed Jose how to defend a 1-0 lead for 90+ minutes. Ings assisted by James Ward-Prowse, natch. LIverpool are struggling for goals, and unless Firmino is doing magic card tricks at the top of the box their attacking band seems very blunt right now. Teams that are the least bit organized defensively seem to be able to contain them. and they are definitely vulnerable if you can get at the CBs. They miss Jota and VvD obviously but this latest loss throws the title picture completely up in the air, with 8 teams all within a few points of each other (not even counting Chelsea in 9th.

And speaking of Chelsea, yes Werner seems lost. I thought he would be a very good signing but so far you are right Lutz, he had that career defining miss against Leeds and since then he's looked appallingly low in confidence. It doesnt help that Giroud the complete opposite type player is converting chances at every opportunity like he's popping peeled grapes into his mouth. I hate Giroud because of his clubs, but also he seems like the smuggest person ever. But he is the classiest finisher in the PL since Robert Van Persie. Also that team has a lot of flash but some big holes like Azpiliqueta, Pulisic not tracking back, Ziyech/Werner/Mount not on the same page. Giroud unfortunately seems to knit together the attacking band with his link up play in a way that Werner doesnt. They looked completely outclassed against City, who, to be fair, were resplendent. One of De Bruyne's best matches. He is, sans doubt, my favorite player to watch in world football when he is on. The complete, all around, "5 tool" as we say in America, midfielder. He is just breathtaking when he is on, although he has been carrying too much of City's load this year. If they continue to play like this they will win the league.

Liverpool imploding in real time with United on their heels. Smells like 2009.

Luckily there's lots of season to play for.

imo, all of these developments are still pretty much business as usual. can anyone remember a january in the last 5 years when liverpool didn't suck ? this is their traditional rock bottom moment as far as the form goes and from this point they only go up.

however, if united happens to book a CL spot this season by some miracle it will be a fucking scandal, let alone win the PL.

I agree this isnt a Liverpool Implosion, just a difficult run, and they will probably still end up first or second. I think it'll be Liverpool-City-United-Spurs in the CL next year. With Liverpool and City battling it out for the title and United Spurs for 3rd.

Schalke is an implosion.

They were selling virtual tickets to the match, hoping to get some funds to make up for the lost revenue they would have received from the gate. The grounds have a 2100 capacity. They were hoping to sell 600-1000 virtual tickets. As of yesterday they had sold upwards of 35,000 at 10 pounds each.

It was actually a fun match, maybe the most fun to watch all year. Marine were barely holding on through 20 scoreless minute when Kengni, Marine’s right winger, took the ball forward into a pocket of space, and from 35 yards out drilled a speculative shot that caught Joe Hart napping. He completely misjudged the flight of the ball, thinking it would clear the crossbar but it dipped at the last second and struck the bar, careening up and forcing Hart to tap it over for a corner kick. After that it was all Spurs, Vinicius with a 1st half hattirck, and Dele controlling the game from the #10 position at the top of the box. 16 year old Alfie Devine became the youngest player to ever play for Spurs, and the youngest goal scorer. The only player (ahem) "booked" in the match was Marine's left back James Joyce.

With Bayern tossing away a two goal lead on Friday, Leipzig could have gone top with a win against Dortmund on Saturday. I thought Rats played OK in the first half, with more passes completed, more possession, and better chances created. But the second half was probably the worst half of football I've ever seen Rats play. Not sure what happened but Dortmund were by far the better team, and were running rampant on the left side. Sancho's goal he had an entire half of the pitch to himself. Haaland's was a product of his strength, skill, quick feet. dribbled past three defenders, pass the ball out onto the wing, and made a far post run for the floated cross in which he just bullied Halstenberg. And his second, just an explosive first step and burst of quickness to get to the through ball before Gulacsi and then just danced around him.
