Ach. Today I watched both the NU Women and the NU Men choke games away. The women had a chance to win in regulation after a nice comeback at the Barn in Minny, but their best player clanged two foul shots that would have put the game away, and they got crushed in OT. The men were up 15 with 4 and half minutes to go against the top-20 Hawkeyes in Iowa City and managed to completely fall apart and lose. I mean, I know they don't have a point guard, but a D-1 team really ought to be able to handle a trap against a so-so defense, no?

I hate sports.

Ethan Happ had what I think was the worst game I've seen him play in four years today. Turned the ball over almost every time he touched it (7 in all, I believe--to go with just 4 points). Wisconsin had to sit him for much of the game in order to pull out a win against Nebraska, which has played only 7 guys over the past three days--and only used 6 today. The Huskers played incredible defense throughout but were too exhausted to score late in the second half.

No Big 10 team that has played on Wednesday has ever made it to the semi-finals. That won't change this year, but it's too bad Nebraska will be graduating some of their best players, because what they were able to do with only six scholarship players available at the end of this season was impressive. And that defense!

The last two days were examples of why I still bother to watch March Madness despite thinking Div 1 is mainly shitty basketball. The UCF/VCU trashketball was brutally unwatchable and it wasn't the only one. Then again the Wofford game was very entertaining and Duke conducted Dunkfest 2019 last night.

The Maryland game today should determine Mark Turgeon's future. L$U, the higher seed, is without their coach and it's time for Turgeon to show that makes a difference. Mark's a very good recruiter, much better than Gary Williams was, but his bench coaching is brutally bad at times. I think it was two years ago that he was thoroughly out coached by Huggy. The team was totally unprepared for a pressing defense and tried to dribble through it rather than bring a big man back, pass in to him over the top and let guys start cutting off him and getting two on one layups until he calls off the dogs and plays you straight up. I was stunned by the strategic dumbfuckery and it still bothers me. So for me today's game should determine his future.

Welp another crushing defeat (there are so many...) but Mark coached well in the second half and I can't blame him for three missed free throws, a botched fast break and an ill advised three down the stretch. Actually LSU never figured out the zone. Fucking kids.

Once Indy figured out the Hogs' offence, about halfway through the first half, Ark. had no idea what to do: nearly every play involved rushing a bad shot to avoid a clock violation Wasn't a good look for Mike's future.

Oregon looks like they are on pogo sticks, what do they feed those kids? the color guy namechecked Stromile Swift, who bounced his way all the way to the #2 pick, and he could have been talking about multiple guys.

all 16 teams left spent at least one week in the AP top 15 this year, that is insane and presumably unprecedented. it's like tennis, people root for early upsets but they forget that makes for shittier later round matches. this should be a fantastic rest of the way, no one coming in the back door this year. hard to believe how close Duke was to going out too, inches away is overstating it.

BTW, yesterday was the first time this year that I'd seen Virginia, a team that's disappointed me a couple of times in previous tournaments. I guess they must be good, having had the year they did in the ACC and now finally making it to the sweet 16, but they didn't exactly blow me away. Also finally saw the Zags (who did look good).

Not sure why there wasn't a pool here this year, but I hadn't seen enough games (except in the Big 10) to have had much of an idea what I was doing. I'm pretty sure I'd have had Iowa State win a couple of games.....

Not sure why there wasn't a pool here this year, but I hadn't seen enough games (except in the Big 10) to have had much of an idea what I was doing. I'm pretty sure I'd have had Iowa State win a couple of games.....

Even though I've enjoyed most of March Madness, particularly the Holes getting worked, I paid no attention to the regular season and wasn't interested in being in a pool. My interest in Div 1 has peaked for whatever reason. Oh who am I kidding; I despise the NCAA.

yeah, I'm also done doing the pool, I prefer to root for whoever I want as it goes and not have that influenced by the picks I've made beforehand.
