I've done an unrepentant 180 on Phil. I like his heart on the sleeve and silly countenances these days. Mr. Tuesday on duty, fuck robogolfers, I thought Stenson would pounce. Nothing wrong with Phil lurking in a major for entertainment's sake. 6x6!

Touché, but when it comes to rich white golfers my stomach turns much more violently at Azinger or Webb Simpson tweeting bible verses and political rants. Azinger after his Ryder captaincy re: Players complaining about his ceaseless evangelization: "Well it wasn't any kind of outreach."

I think the golf channel article is pretty fair: Mickelson probably doesn't deserve all the loathing that (the surprising number of) guys like me give him. But as y'all know here there's a type that just drives me nuts. You can tell he cares too much about his image--that makes him artificial right off the bat and just starts annoying me immediately. Too much broad smiling for the crowd, e.g., too smooth. It's the Pitino biz. Add Mickelson's support for conservative Repub. candidates, and it's likely I'm going to dislike him. Then, of course with me, there's a natural tendency to root against favorites and he's always one of them, so he doesn't get much chance.

I don't know the current crop of top golfers well enough to have heroes. But I used to enjoy whichever of the Hills was the crazy one. (Was it Mike?)

If you're extremely rich and successful, as most celebs are likely to be, you've got a couple of strikes against you in the resentment-filled Hornbook, so you really have to jack it personality-wise to have any hope, not that any of them should give a shit (though the Mickelsons and Rivers of the world seem to, for some reason).

Shocking as it may seem for this anti-homer, though, I have nothing bad to say about Brad Stevens--and, of course, I used to like Tom Thibideau (and still do).

I pretty much agree with everything Schau said. Plus Phil has had so many high exposure meltdowns that he was never ever gonna be in the conversation for the GOAT with its associated irritations imo; actually closer to the second coming of Greg Norman. But he seems to have become mentally tougher as Eldrick has fallen apart. Even when his putter was completely worthless in the US Open's final round (funny that the reason he was even in contention was because of chipping in an eagle) and he didn't make a single medium to long putt, it didn't impact the rest of his game being solid on an extremely unforgiving course.

Rory McIlroy is the next big thing of the post Tiger era. Incredible final day for the PGA tourney (marred a bit by the PGA going full clown car with darkness approaching instead of finishing it tomorrow; sorry but it was the wrong way for an excellent day to end), maybe the best I've ever seen as far as there being a lot of players in it playing at a high level instead of the previous three majors featuring one person who doesn't fill his Depends and everybody else does. Rory didn't start the day with his A game but every time the pressure was highest he bore down and delivered.

I guess it was fitting that the Shark making his major tournament broadcast debut should feature a major high exposure meltdown on the final hole after Dustin Johnson was within 12 feet on a 600 yard hole with a driver and 5 iron and down one to Jordan Spieth he fucking three putted. The greens were parched dogshit on that extremely tricked out course (more about that later) and that wasn't the only time his putter went in the shitter today (or Spieth losing a three stroke lead by three putting previously while DJ got a birdie). Louis Oosthuizen was about the only golfer impervious to the conditions on the back nine when he shot a 29 and finished tied with DJ. DJ really should've taken more time on the second putt to force a playoff tomorrow (18 holes; fuck off USGA); I don't know what was going through his mind (although maybe he was pissed that one of the fucking trains went by during his first putt) then, maybe he's back to banging other pro's wives. Some dickhole fan yelled out "Happy Father's Day, DJ" as he was walking off; I hope that cocksucker is being flogged as I type this.

The course was just a fucking dumpster fire in a very scenic area in Puget Sound that had rock hard fairways and greens where the ball would go skittering into a bunker for no apparent reason. I would imagine that all the greens will be replaced because for fuck sake, it will go back to being a PUBLIC course tomorrow and bear no resemblance to what it was over the last four days, which for a public course would be like using a Funny Car for drivers ed. Plus I'll bet it was a nightmare to be in the gallery particularly if you wanted to follow a particular player. You've gone too far, USGA. I don't think the players or the fans liked it. Another sport ruined by the Pacific Northwest.

I am not a golf fan but watched the home stretch and that was indeed a disgusting course to look at and seemingly a ridiculous course to try to play. playing in a parking lot would be really challenging too, but not what I think of as golf.

the craziest thing about Oosthuizen is he shot a 77 on Thursday, just three better than the remnants of Tiger. he came back from that to within one shot of first, especially impressive on a course like that.
