Jérôme Noetinger/Will Guthrie-Face Off (Erstwhile 064)

I'm very proud to announce the latest pair of Erstwhile releases are at the printers, and will be available in a few weeks. Face Off marks the debut of Will Guthrie on Erstwhile, and Jérôme Noetinger's third release for the label after The Hands of Caravaggio and What a Wonderful World.

as usual, I haven't yet finished the PR for this, but I'm ready to start accepting preorders for it now. $15 in the US/Canada, $19 anywhere else in the world (those include shipping), paypal to ErstRecs@aol.com and I'll send your copy as soon as I get it, plus if you ask, I will send you a link to CD-quality digital files ASAP. if you want to order multiple items and save on shipping, please e-mail me first as always so I can put them aside/make sure I have them for you and give you a shipping estimate/total. thanks!

First listen and it's great. Anyone who loved "Spear" will probably love this one as well. Much more drumming than I expected, too!

Dan Warburton wrote:is the silhouette cover of the new album culled from a western I know? Seems to ring a bell, that drawing..
now that I have this in my hand, it looks to me to be a pastiche (and improvement) of all those spaghetti western title sequences that tried to rip off For A Fistfull Of Dollars.

glad this release exists. I've been waiting patiently for the record that captured Will Guthrie as I experienced him a few years back, performing live in a subway station, and while the room shaking caused by passing trains is missing, Noetinger's Revox shaking is a more than worthy substitute.
torn, toiled and troubled

people seem to have slept on this one a bit so far, so nice to see some appreciative reviews coming out. here's another, from Bill Meyer:

and he summarizes it excellently:
Face Off feels at one old and new. It celebrates sounds and methods that have been around for decades, and at no time does one feel like one is hearing music of a digital age. But it is played with such immediacy and paced with such unpredictability that it feels as fresh as the thought you haven’t finished yet. It is music of possibility.

He seems as comfortable reviewing this as I would be writing about Burzum.
