Objects is a solo percussion piece that takes its name from the psychoanalytic theory known as Object Relations in which it’s believed that human beings are not pleasure seeking but instead have, above all else, an innate desire to form and maintain relationships. It is through these relationships that all other drives in our lives gain meaning. Initially this ‘meaning’ is derived from an object’s utilitarian function (the mother’s breast, a cherished toy, a pet) rather than any emotional or intellectual concept; it’s only after direct interaction with the object that a greater understanding of the object and of the self is later reached. In the music of Objects, percussion instruments are played using only the most basic techniques, carefully studying the original functions of simple instruments (congas, woodblocks, and claves) and hearing those sounds develop and grow as the various relationships (to the vibraphone, to each other) are thoroughly explored. With the subtle addition of the vibraphone, this activity reveals a rich and unique harmonic world created by so-called “unpitched” percussion instruments.
