from WWeek:

[ONE NIGHT ONLY] This locally produced documentary intersperses colorful footage of Old Town with interviews and performances by Portland's eclectic community of experimental artists. Some participants focus on barbaric sonic expression, while others craft cosmic aural treatises that could easily pose as art-house installations (if the volume were kept in check). Apocalypse and futurism are touched on repeatedly in interviews, which tend to be much more engaging than the accompanying performances. Most viewers will not be able to tell the difference between the grinding distorted feedback exploits from one performance to the next anyway. But as solo artist Sisprum Vish points out, ingesting noise music is the sonic equivalent of enjoying wasabi. This is stimulation and rebellion that rock music no longer offers. With two final juxtaposed images (I won’t give them away), director Adam Cornelius powerfully conveys the idea that noise music is a reflection of the chaos of nature, implying that gentler musical sounds are often shackled by convention and unnatural order. Soup Purse describes noise as "Blade Runner music.” It is the sound of the future. The future is now.

NATHAN CARSON

from Yahoo!:
People Who Do Noise is a film about the experimental music of Portland, Oregon. Extensive interviews and intimate performance footage provide an intense portrait of the motivations, emotions, and ideas that go into this uncompromising, sometimes brutal musical form. Unwavering in its focus, the film brings to light an art form unfathomable to many, with only the words of the musicians themselves providing any explanation for the pulsating sonic chaos they create.

The film takes a very personal approach, capturing the musicians working alone with no interference from a live audience. What often took place in crowded basements or dark smoky venues was stripped bare for the cameras, providing an unprecedented glimpse of the many different instruments and methods used.

Covering a wide range of artists and styles, the film features everything from the absurdist free-improvisations of genre-pioneers Smegma, to the harsh-noise assaults of Oscillating Innards and everything in between. Many of the artists in the film, such as Yellow Swans and Daniel Menche, have performed and sold records all over the world. In spite of such successes, noise music remains one of the least understood and most inaccessible of genres.

With an unflinching cinematic style, the film defies any trend-setting or commercial representation, opting instead for a stark portrayal of a musical underground at its most genuine and vital. For the subjects of the film, noise music is a way of life; a life in opposition to the tidy, orderly, and vacuous pop-culture experience.

ok so that dude's not you... the mystery deepens... there's 1000 copies pressed of the dvd so I think you should still be able to see it...

I think a lot of us who were in this expected to be embarrassed (all this was shot well over a year ago, haircuts + styles change you know), but it went pretty well given the circumstances. This movie is not a comprehensive intro to noise, and it’s target audience is not noise people really (although it may appeal to them). The theater was packed with people who mostly don’t go to noise shows watching a movie that focuses on personality + motivation, mostly in relation to playing noise sets in front of people. Some people might get bummed because there’s no dead bodies or tits on the cover and men like to talk about their feelings in the pacific northwest ans the director potentially owns no c10s. But it’s still pretty interesting.
The Smegma interviews are really insightful, and the Pulse Emitter interview is absolutely epic. Also you get some ringside at a swan fight!
I posted that last paragraph on another board first, sorry if that's totally lazy

hahah great post!

yeah, actually. . . i sort of wish there was more stuff around that explained noise/experimental/whatnot music for the non-initiate. it seems like a lot of people are able to get into things and maybe even really curious once they understand that there is no "secret" or hidden motivation going on. so much of the mainstream journalism (even by music critics) is so lazy or poorly informed that it almost does a disservice. contrast with say your typical daily or weekly newspaper's visual art or film coverage, which is generally miles better. . .
