Ah, the telltale indicators of journalist fatigue.. I used to drift into this no man's land myself: if you can't think of anything intelligent / interesting to say, or if you've already said it elsewhere, throw up a smokescreen and talk about something else altogether. The only thing I learnt from the above was Mark Fisher's death, which saddened me.
All I can say - after listening to it once, and once is not enough - is that I found Roil very convincing. Great sounds, well structured, I need another listen

Roil was released back in February, but in a week which saw the passing of Mika Vainio, its meticulous roughness seems totally appropriate. Bennett’s work may differ from Vainio’s both in technique and content but Roil shares some of the Finnish noise pioneer’s maverick spirit and deadpan aggression. Mandatory listening.

The "mandatory listening" is a great way to go out - but I'm a little surprised by the Vainio connection. Were you, Dan? Time to go back to those Pan(a)Sonic CDs gathering dust in my bedroom airing cupboard, methinks

It's weird to comment. I think it's just timing. It's easy to build a connection, when something is in your thoughts, which you mightn't have otherwise made.
I think I'd read it more as a respectful nod to Vaino's passing.

The track titles are kind of a bad joke - that could easily be the deadpan bit.

There are worse ways to spend a few hours than playing old Pansonic discs
