a few notes on this release, since the forthcoming release pipeline is a bit of a mess right now and some explanation is needed. i had a hard drive crash (sort of.... see facebook for the story) and lost my directory of forthcoming releases (in my defense i really thought i had copied "essential" data to a more secure location before stomping [literally] on the aforementioned hard drive). anyways, my plan was to push out the new releases (3 in total, including the owen/birchett release which is friggin amazing) before leaving for alaska on a long siesta, but the day before my trip i discovered that i had blown out the precious directory of future homos and was so bummed i decided to put homophoni to bed for 2012 and get it all sorted out next year.

this release happened quite by accident with less than 24 hours before my flight (and while i generally do not approve of such quick turnarounds it felt right and was quite cathartic so i went forward). it is dedicated to tyler keen because he had commented in facebook chat that he'd like to hear another 'classic longform kirby album' which tickled me greatly and ultimately inspired this recording. a few additional notes: i generally play through fancy preamps and at least one outboard compressor, but financial troubles have forced me to sell all my nice crap so this is the first time i've ever simply recorded an improvisation direct. i mention this not to excuse the quality, but because i'm actually quite pleased with the quality. it's lo-fi in a sense, but i realized that i spend a lot of time watching faders and am constantly tweaking my signal chain. it was refreshing to have that attention directed towards the improvisation and not the logistics of documentation. lastly, the title 'opus aleph' is somewhat self-explanatory, but also represents a personal symbolism. i have always felt quite strongly that 'opus' was my best work, so naturally my drive is littered with attempts (ie, opus ii, iii, iv, et. al) at reaching the same high felt while recording that piece. this recording marks the first time that i really felt like i 'got there' in the same way as 'opus', but also marks a personal triumph of getting there in 3 hours instead of 6--hence 'aleph', signifying a new plateau and numbering system. furthermore, my last physical release 'cittakarnera' was also an attempt at an 'opus'-style improvisation in a shorter time span, and while i am very happy with the result, the general consensus has been that it attempts to pack way too much into a single hour and seems to leave listeners feeling rather jolted. as such, this piece is also dedicated to those listeners and to COPY FOR YOUR RECORDS for the willingness to take risks on true experiments. it is my hope that 'cittakarnera' will make a little more sense in the context of this recording and my musical growth (or digression) as a whole. phew... ok, i think that's everything. questions welcome.
