I know how to mix 5.1, and multichannel in general, on the software side well enough. I want to find out if there's a way to compose using a normal store-bought home cinema system, what interfaces are good at doing this, what theory I need to read up on (dolby standards or whatever). Or even what kind of home cinema system would be most neutral or reference class. And cheap, of course. We're starving artists here! The idea is to work directly from computer to surround system, not computer - interface - individual speakers.
Please take my apology if this offends some composers here, I don't mean to start an argument about composer intention and system control. If it turns out it's not possible to create a worthwhile piece of music for everyone to play on their crappy home cinema, then at least I've satisfied my curiosity
