I love me some No Input, and would like to get into it. However, I have very little spending money at the moment. I probably can't go higher than $75 for beginner equipment.

What sort of sounds could I get out of a "cheap" Behringer mixer like this?

Another question: would it be possible to create a VST plugin mimicking a NIMB with all digital feedback? Theoretically speaking, of course . . . thanks.

You need something to process the feedback. So the behringer needs fx, eq and some of that. You can use your stompboxes if you have some or get a mixer with fx.

Regarding your last question. You can feed back one output of your sound interface to one of its inputs. Build a track in your audio editor / daw with the input and the VSTs of your choice and send the result to your feedback output and your monitor / amp. I would go for the bass amp.

It is all about trying.

the easiest way to do no input for very little money is to get a cheap digitech multieffect box..

like one of these:




(99 bucks...you can still find the 150 floating around for less..)

they have stereo outputs (left out into input) and a usb port, and you can download a bit of software from digitech called X-edit (free) which allows you to twiddle the virtual knobs in real time..

the right output can go out to an amp or monitor and you can record your work with audacity (also free..)

Yes. That sounds interesting, but forgive me, I have a hard time conceptualizing how that would actually work. It's basically just feeding the input back into the output right? Would the noises then be coming out of my bass amp, or out of my computer speakers? Again, please forgive my ineptitude. If you're curious, I use FL Studio for some electronic stuff, I can see trying to accomplish this experiment through that . . .

And trying: absolutely. That's the joy in it, I think.

Not neccessarily, for me 'no input mixing' has always just been about using mixer/s and nothing else. Using a feedback loop of fx pedals (which I do all the time and is great!) feels like a different approach even tho yes there's no 'input' per se.

One of my earliest CDrs was entirely made without even a 'real' mixer, no fx sends or anything, just a cheap DJ mixer and a couple of terrible camcorder audio mixers + whatever cables and adaptors I could find. The last track uses almost literally NO gear, I just connected the minidisc recorder input to output and fiddled with the volume with surprisingly interesting (considering...) results

pure mixer feedback with no FX can be pretty raw/basic to say the least (I always kind of had the idea that this CDr should be listened to really loud but from a long distance/down a tunnel or something ^_^) but you can get quite complicated sounds not just plain tones...

If you want to try it with FL I would go a similar way, as I do with my DAW (QBase). Make an audio track. It gets as input the feedback input and as output the feedback output. Both are connected with a cable physically. So you have built a loop. In this track you can use any VST FX as inserts. You can also route hardware FX between the feedback input and output.
Then you use a send bus of this track to send it to another output. So you can monitor it. That's it.

But you can also try the routes the other comrades suggested. They are really good. As I said: It's all about tryin. But with my suggestion you can experiment with feedbacks and probably go the no cost way.

I got a Mackie ProFX8 for about £70 and that has served me well. I usually throw a couple of fx pedals/units in the way and have another mixing desk now to add into the fray, but I've also done performances with just the ProFX8 and gotten really diverse sounds out of it.

I have gotten a lot of mileage out of a stereo 15-band graphic equalizer (rack unit) that i purchased for around $40 on ebay. 15 bands of eq is a lot of control over what sounds you get. I find that rack unit effects, especially old stuff, can give you a much larger bang/buck as compared with pedals on the used market.

It's been a lot since I last posted here, and reading this thread I couldn't resist. One very cheap solution that I thought of while reading is to use Reaper for the feedback. It has some nice default plugins (parametric EQ + filters, compressor (whole-band and multiband), reverb, delay, etc) and an option to allow feedback on the routing (I don't remember at the moment where to set this, but it's not hard) and you can download it for free.
