TIN Arts and ISIS Arts are seeking an audio artist to join the production team for Shake the Tree, a new dance piece by The Flex Dance Company premiering in January 2012.
The audio artist needs to have experience of producing audio soundtracks, using pre and newly recorded audio material up to a professional standard as well as a proven track record of producing audio for public presentation, which may include an element of live audio mixing.
The artist will join the production team (TIN Arts, production manager, set designer, choreographer and visual artist) and will be involved in the early stages of the rehearsals from October (in Durham) and final rehearsals from January 21st including the final production on January 28th (at Dance City).
Technical support for the final performance at Dance City is already in place and the audio artist will be responsible only for the audio soundtrack part of the production.
The artist will be supported by ISIS Arts, based in central Newcastle, and will have access to a studio space with digital facilities for the duration of the project. However they will be expected to have their own audio equipment to carry out the project.
It will be essential that the artist can show a proficiency in making audio for public presentation but they do not necessarily need previous experience of working with a dance or theatre company.
Role of the Audio Artist
The audio artist will:
• Produce a 40-minute soundtrack to accompany the live choreographed piece using a mixture of existing and newly recorded material
• Work collaboratively alongside the production team to produce the audio
• Take part in production meetings and a final evaluation meeting
Essential skills, Audio Artist:
The audio artist will have:
• Experience of creating new audio to a professional standard
• Experience of working collaboratively with others
• Experience of producing work for public presentation
• Experience of working on fixed term residencies with deadlines
• An energetic approach with a willingness for new and fresh approaches to producing audio
• Self-motivation and initiative
• Availability (part-time) between October-January 2012

About ‘Shake the tree’
Primarily a dance piece, ‘Shake the tree’ incorporates live performance, along with recorded visual and audio material. The piece explores how young people with a learning disability are leaving school and entering the world of Personalisation and choice.
A whole new generation of young people with a learning disability, their families and their supporting networks are suddenly being thrust into the role of ‘commissioner’ with little experience of what this role means and how it manifests itself in real life.
At a time when the government are promoting the ‘big society’ we are all being asked to think about that we personally can do to help and how we can contribute. Conversely young people with a learning disability are being asked by society to choose what help they need to progress and thrive in adulthood, making key decisions that could affect the rest of their lives.
The piece asks how fair it is to be asked to make choices when the repercussions of these choices can’t be known or proven. It asks, in the context of Personalisation, what we understand the role as a ‘commissioner’ ought to be? Given the chance how many of us could or would draw a roadmap for ourselves that could impact on the rest of our lives? One bad choice, one ill-informed decision and the consequences could reverberate for decades. One good choice or moment of inspiration, and the possibilities are endless.
