my latest setup (as promised)

this was the setup i used a few days ago for a local screening of the passion of joan of arc with a live, improvised score. i usually use a laptop and do breakcore/idm/mashup type stuff, but this setup was all hardware. i forgot to bring a camera so i only have this small pic. here's what i used (in order of signal chain):

shure sm57 (source: toy recorder, harmonica, wine glasses, my clothes, the floor, broken cymbals, my voice... no, not the cell phone)
alesis compressor
boss volume pedal
digitech pedalboard (distortion, pitch shift, delay)
dod juice box (overdrive)
dod envelope filter
dod 4 second delay/sampler
alesis compressor
line mixer

while i was playing, i was accompanied by this fun rig:

the show was recorded, but not by me. if i get an mp3 of the set, i'll link it in this thread.

What modular setup is that? Are there more pictures of it somewhere? That controller looks pretty badass.

I lusted after modular synths for ages, but just could never justify the cost. Now that Synthesis Technology does their module a month program I'm pretty tempted again. But to be honest I've been able to get most of my modular jones out of my system with my Nord MicroModular.

i'm clueless on that one... i've played a ocuple of these film things with the guy who built it. he goes by 'fluxmonkey' and 'luigi-bob drake' (not THAT bob drake, i checked... haha). he doesn't really have a web prescence... the sounds he gets out of that thing are great, though.

it was a pretty cool set. most of the folks who contributed aren't really 'ambient' or 'improv' musicians, but for a bunch of local guys getting together it was pretty cool.

dunno about the synth itself, but the controller looks like one of these suckers:

That thing does look smokin' cool. I'm way into alternative interfaces, I feel that the shackling of synths, especially analog synths, to the keyboard has really forced a different kind of thinking on them than other interfaces would have. Part of the reason I love Buchla's so much is that he also eschew the keyboard as interface. When I got my MicroModular I got a Kaoss Pad to use as an controller, which works but it's resolution is so low that I didn't get much out of it. The ultimate controller has to be the new Lemur it is a 12" lcd touchscreen. it's software allows you to create your own interface that can be controlled by touch. It has multiple regions so you can can have multiple control surfaces of whatever style. If it wasn't US$2500 (!!!) I'd buy one today.

From the Lemur Press Release:

You touch colorful rounded interface objects on the 12" LCD display to control your computer in any way you can imagine . I played around with a prototype Lemur a coupla months ago in Seoul - Franck Stofer of Sonare Records brought one over, he's buddies w/ the designer - and it was indeed rad. A kid played it by rolling oranges around on the screen at one point. Unfortunately he only had it hooked up to some super-lame MSP patches, but the interface was cooool.
