help me start circuit bending

i got $65 for christmas and i want to put it towards getting myself some tools for circuit bending. where are the best places to get cheap tools (soldering pencil, etc.) and parts (pots and switches). also, if someone could recommend the tools, books, or first projects that no bender should be without that would be appreciated.

pick up some radio amateur magazine, browse for DIY sites, try to built multivibrator (or oscillator), and play sinwave with it. its essential circuit for beginners. (i can tell a lot about DIY and stuff, for beginner, but its all specific to our country ofcourse)

the best way to start is just with a piece of wire and a cheap, battery operated device. open it up and start connecting things that aren't already connected. when you find something interesting, make a note of it. switches are the easiest way to start since you don't need to know much to put one on. pots, etc can get a bit trickier.

i just opened up some pedals and stared soldering til something sounded good. worked out for me.

this site is all you need as far as resources go. i started bending things a few months ago and so far the whole experience has been much easier than i thought it would be.

how do i know what resistance the pots i use should have? i see them ranging from 1K-470K and i don't want to waste my money on the ones i'll never use.

It will vary depending on the circuit you're "bending" but one trick is to use a couple resistors you know the ratings of and place those where you'd like to put a pot. You can use the sounds you get from different resistances as a guide to what kind of pot will be useful.
