difference between kaos pad 1 & 2??

i was wondering if anyone knew the difference between a kaos pad 1 and 2? there is a big price difference so i want to know if there is a difference between the two.

i just don't like how they sound or enjoy the touch interface all that much, they feel very novelty to me. i've used a k2 a couple times and really didn't like the sound coming out of it and did a set with a guy doing vocals through a k2 and i thought it sounded pretty lame. i've seen a few people use them live and it was almost always just a blatant use of it. sorta like when a guitarist steps on his phaser so he can "freak out".

While any piece of gear can be used effectively (see J. Lescalleet's use of the Casio SK-1!), I also hate the Kaoss pad. EVERYONE seems to have one these days, their preset effects are pretty recognizable and flaccid, and they don't do too much else. The one thing I DO like about them, however, is the fact that you can use two samples and control/blend them via the X/Y axes, which is fun.

Last year in Tokyo I played with the guy who designed the original Kaoss pad & still leads their dev. team - he had a HUGE one (just for him, I suppose) and it seemed to have more features, although the effects were still wimpy.

Needless to say, I don't use one, but then again, I don't use any efffects.

i don't know what the difference between the two is, but panzner rocks k2 all over the scenic recordings & i'd be hard pressed to pick it out. blends in with the laptops just fine. maybe he's subtler than others or something.

or maybe the pad just works well with digital stuff. now that i think about it, carlos giffoni uses one (two?) with his laptop & it also sounds pretty sweet.

the k2 will hold 2 samples at one time and allows you to mix them (as mentioned). probably more effects and what not too, but the sampling thing is the big deal. i for some reason think the k1 didn't even hold samples at all.

erik m uses 2 kaos pads when he performs live(among other things) and he's phenomenal!

i haven't seen many people use the kaoss pad with any real subtlety (more like the gesutral-control equivalent of a kerry king guitar solo). plus you're limited the crap-algorithm built-in effects.

if you're using a daw as is, check out the tactex/mig stc-1000:

all the benefits of tactile control, now with 12 discrete zones (kind of like having 12 kaoss pads in one box) assignable in 3 dimensions (x/y and contact pressure on the z) to anything that receives midi. plus you can rest easy knowing that you're putting nasa technology to deviant use...

$225 is the cheapest. they're powered (wall-wart), midi in/out (no usb direct connection), so ostensibly you could use it with just about anything (synths, samplers, etc...). believe the manual is there on one of those site, download it for the specs...

jean-michel couturier has ported richard dudas' wacom object to os x. you can get a graphire for $80 and use that directly from within max-msp (or use an iac bus to send midi info from max-msp to wherever). those things send out a lot of information, could be useful for control data. i'm sure you could set up a comparable 12-point array ala the device above there...

although using one of those with a wacom or the tactex unit above it kind of like "flying an f-18 to work", if you know what i mean...

i've been using one of the kenton's to control my sequential circuits pro-one via max-msp for a year now. solid as a rock. great if you want to control just about any gate/cv-based systems via digital control...
