Played with this a bit during my holiday in montreal. it's embarrassingly simple but i really enjoy that aspect of it. i just sort of feel like there's no substitute for hardware. maybe i can buy a ton of test tone generators?

CM Von Hauswolff basically has a big box of oscillators I saw him use in performance back in december, individual outs for each oscillator, inputs for ring modulation - really basic (really big for what it is), but hey, it can be done.

while PD/Max are great for cooking this kind of thing up, I always feel that in order to make something like this bank of [osc]s work is either a great GUI or a massive hardware MIDI/OSC controller.

I'm with you on this entirely, especially since i've had more time to play with it. I know behringer makes a usb controller with just a ton of knobs. Something along those lines might be needed in the future.

I really enjoy that kind of patches too, I usually add a pan control on each osc to give it a bit more of flexibility.

A GUI is nice, and does not require that much computing ressources as some tend to say, but it can be pretty much boring and long to build up if you want it to look nice.

I use to have a Korg nanokontrol, but I can't get it to work now that i switched to a 64bits OS... Bloody drivers

I've estimated that at least 1/3rd of my programming time is in making my UI "just so."

yeah i skimmed a pd tutorial just to be able to do basic stuff like that so the thought of me trying to make a "nice" gui is just out of the question at this point lol...

I built a similar patch in Max, except I added some functionality that let's you set an upper and lower freq limit, and the speed at which it will automatically go between the two. Also some mod freq and depth too, for a little more fun.

Yeah well at least you had the cash at one point lol. I do like Pd though, black/white and free. That's what I'm into. But you guys are making me feel lazy with all this patching talk cause i never modded mine. maybe i should go through the tutorial again.

a max patch i've been working with lately. simple but it surges with electricity and can be quite unpredictable with the sounds it makes, which i like. i can get anything from post-techno rhythms to layers of oscillation to buzzing glissandi to dot-matrix-printer-like booms.

really am impressed with some of this stuff though. hatta's wire harp has gone through quite an interesting transformation that i enjoy.
