Not a recent acquisition, but a recent construction... two pickups, two kill switches, and an output jack in a speaker I got at the thrift store. I'm inordinately proud of myself for having built this. I'll put a volume and tone control in and it's going to be my new invention - the no string guitar.
Barry, funds are tight at the moment due to my recent CD buying spree (which includes a title by one Barry Chabala as a matter of fact) but I'll let you know if and when I can take that Rat kit off your hands. Assuming it's still around...

Nice. Is that a contact mic as well? Is this a feedback machine since it's basically in a speaker?

I've been playing this too but mine is considerably less elaborate - just the pickup wired directly to a cord.

Believe me, I thought about trying to hook up the speakers as well but I don't think it would work without an onboard preamp. I may hook up a 1/4 input so I can run an out from my mixer back into those speakers though, it should be feedback goodness. That round thing is actually a chinese coin I picked up off the ground in Bali years ago, I bolted it to the speaker case and hooked the ground wires up to it so I'd be able to ground the buzz away. I do have some contact mics in the mail though so I'm sure they will find their way onto that box soon enough.

Looking forward to having this in my pocket, it's the size of a cell phone.

Love it. It gives me feedback at the lowest of volumes.

Do you know the work of Pascal Battus? he's been doing a guitar pick-ups only project for some years now, he has released a superb record called pick-up on the Amor Fati label (France). He's an awesome guy, you should check it out, really raw and uncompromising :)

Sounds interesting, I will investigate. A fair amount of what someone like Keith Rowe does is basically interacting with the pickups anyway (electric fans, pot scrubbers and what not) so i figured that since I do a lot of that I could just make a box for that purpose and save space. I thought about buying a cheap electric guitar and taking the neck and strings off, but this was cheaper and I had the parts laying around so...

Status report if you please.

Well, it shares all the peculiarities of the Digitech Digidelay (it's glitchy and you have to be always aware of the repeat setting {if set for maximum repeats it won't repeat} ..and it literally eats batteries as snacks..) Still, it's got eight seconds of delay/sampling and the quality of the sound is definitely a step up from the digidelay...

It's also got this molded rubber...thing...that is supposed to fit over the knobs to save your settings....I for one, cannot imagine using it..

I think once I buy a proper power supply for the thing, I'll be well satisfied with it..

my most recent purchase, from a troniks board classified at a low price. I've had it now for about 2 months or something. it's a VC-distortion, more or less. I use it to get cross modulation effects out of my mixer feedback setup. it's alright. it's passive, and it doesn't have a bypass. I played aroudn with it using two sine-waves from max-msp and got some pretty neat effects from it. Looking at its output during this test, i can see that half-wave rectification is a major part of what it does, with some additional non-linearity, and the CV apparently cross-fading between clean and dirty outputs. or something.

anyway, I wanted a two-input device, and i've got one.

Bad buy. Sounds as awful as the same function on my digitech rp250 (which is why I bought it). Well, there will be a way to use it, I guess, but compared to the slow gear emulation on my zoom g2, it really sucks. And that already sucked in comparison to the zoom pedal I had 10 years ago, which probably sucked compared to the boss, which I haven't heard. It seems civilization is slowly unlearning the swelling effect.

Yeah, I'm really happy with it. It cost a lot, but I worked a ton the last couple years and my existing recorder is shitting the bed.
