Digital recorder

I'm going on a school trip to Egypt and we the students are each asked to create a project--written paper etc.--about the experience. I want to do a field recording project, representing Egypt through sound. I've never done that (field recording) before and so I want to get a user-friendly, basic but not limiting, small but robust, and cheap-ish digital recorder for the trip (I'd say the budget is ~$200 but I have no idea if this is possible). I've read some material on field recording but still have no idea... Do you have any recommendations?

not stereo, but for your purposes, granted you already own an ipod, or could find a cheap one, completely sufficient.

I usmine with an iPod touch 2nd gen running "fire rec" which is just a recording program... But most ipods are able to record.
