I'm a bit skeptical of this, though I have no seen it. I would like to see it. However, I don't particularly have interest in Michael Gordon (composer) and the Bang on a Can group. The film seems a bit like William Basinski's "disintegration loops" - possibly a one-trick pony, especially when one considers the tape work of Jason Lescalleet.
The music isn't much like Jason Lescalleet's disintegrating tapes at all (the process in which the film itself was made resembles Lescalleet's work more than the music in it), and it is only a little bit like Basinski's music. It's more like a mescalinian haunted house version of Terry Riley, if that makes any sense... and, of what i've heard, outside of his Decasia soundtrack, Michael Gordon's music seems really unlistenable. I know we all have different opinions here, but I saw Roulette TVs installation on his music, and couldn't keep it on past the first minute. But I definitely suggest seeing the movie- and watching it with its original soundtrack at least once.

Sheer malice.

he also did the music for Ran by Kurosawa

I have a bad memory but I think I remember the 2001 Space Odyssey soundtrack to be quite intriguing and I'm not talking about the Also Sprach Zarathustra part! Also some powerful silent scenes and a very sophisticated use of sound in general in this film. It was striking to me when I saw it a couple of years ago. Or a least that's the impression I have now...

The soundtrack is famous for the Strauss, but what stands out in my memory are the Ligeti pieces, Atmospheres, Lux Aeterna and Adventures.
That soundtrack ( the Ligeti in particular ) blew my very young mind...
It's too bad Ligeti had to sue Kubrick for credit..

I'd heard Ligeti on the soundtrack but never knew there was any legal hullaballoo behind the scenes
I think there're some excerpts from Ligeti pieces in The Shining... Maybe the two had made up by then.

saw "drag me to hell" last night - VERY GOOD, VERY SCARY!
on subject: lots of use of pretty experimental sounding sounds throughout, particuarly some spring reverb effects that just skirted horror movie cliche, and the demon spirit had a sheer hellish miasma moment or two... gooood stuff!

In Order Not to Be Here by Deborah Stratman features music by kevin drumm. Still have to find some time for this one

Some are on ubu
OH and outer space by peter tscherkassky. Love it! The sound track is sufficient to itself. But got to watch it!

Yeah the first attack in the house is the best part of the movie, great sound design.
But I thought it was a catastrophy. It's evil dead disney version.

Re: Recommend films with Experimental music.
I'm halfway through Step Across the Border which has lots of improvised music by Fred Frith and friends. It's more of a travelogue IMO featuring them in Tokyo and New York so far. I hadn't heard of Fred Frith before and I think I will try and find more of his music. He is pretty...

I've not seen it yet but Sleep Furiously (a documentary film about a small, Welsh farming community - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/filmnetwork/A39788239) has a soundtrack by Aphex Twin.
Depends on whether you consider Aphex Twin to be experimental, I guess.

Maya Deren - Meshes of the Afternoon. Soundtrack by Teiji Ito. Loved the film, hated the soundtrack....

Re: Recommend films with Experimental music.
has anyone mentioned 28 days later? i watched this again last night. the film itself and the music by itself is not very "experimental" in the sense that this forum recognizes maybe, but put together it was very novel at the time. G!YBE over zombie pandemonium has a very chilling effect.

Takemitsu also did a large number of soundtracks for films by Toshio Matsumoto. A documentary called 'Music For The Movies' was produced about Takemitsu in the mid-90's but unfortunately i have yet to see it.
Toshio Matsumoto is definitely a director to look for, as he utilized many experimental composers for his films; like Yosuke Inagaki, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Takashi Inagaki, Toru Takemitsu, Jo Kondo, & Joji Yuasa.
He has a 3 DVD set out that i highly recommend.

(edit - i've just noticed a large number of the films on the box set can be downloaded from ubuweb as avi's.)
other good directors to look for are Takashi Ito (who mostly utilized Yosuke Inagaki) and Takahiko Iimura (Yoko Ono, Takehisa Kosugi).

seconded, also recommend 'Breakfast (Table Top Dolly)' and 'WVLNT' (a re-edited version of 'Wavelength'.

Niblock also produced 2 short films for the dvd included in the re-issue of arthur russel's world of echo'; the audio is comprised of arthur russell doing interpretations of 'world of echo' material.

Has that set got subtitles? Limited info there for a non-Japanese speaker. I know the files they host at ubu.com haven't got any (at least the ones I looked at), and I would like to see those films properly.
Re: Recommend films with Experimental music.
no subtitles on the boxset. however, only 4 of the films contain any speech.
they are 'Weavers of Nishijin', 'The Song of Stone', 'Mothers', and 'Engram'.
generally though, speech is used sparingly. an occasional brief voiceover, nestled among long minutes of music.

Okay, thanks a lot.
