Chris Marker, Chats perchés, 2004

Much as I like Marker, I think you have be either French, or reside in France - and more specifically Paris - to get anything out of this. OK, so most of us can remember Bush and Blair, but the heavy empahsis on French politics and the appearance of local figures (hands up who's heard of Pierre Lellouche out there?), many of whom you're just supposed to recognise (who spotted Noël Mamère, anyone?), make it rather parochial. Have to say we watched the French (original) version. I suppose the English audio version isn't very different? Is it?

Great stuff, especially of course Volontè as the neofascist police chief who murders his mistress and.. enough spoilers.

If you haven't seen this yet, check out Volonte in Petri's "The Working Class Goes to Heaven", for me this is the pinnacle of his acting skills, a true tour de force. I like to think about "Investigation of a Citizen.." as a Kafkaesque movie, definitely among the masterpieces of Italian cinema.

I have to say I find Gian Maria Volonté's overacting fun but tiresome after some time. Check out To Each Is Own aka A Ciascuno Il Suo, a more subdued political satire in which he is really at his best, in my opinion.

I have to say I find Gian Maria Volonté's overacting fun but tiresome after some time. Check out To Each Is Own aka A Ciascuno Il Suo, a more subdued political satire in which he is really at his best, in my opinion.

The overacting aspect is definitely worth pointing out, but still, I'll never forget the role, he took a lot of risks with this one - mad, crazy, almost schizo and off his rocker. It might be a tiresome experience, but also equally unforgettable.

In "A ciascuno il suo" he also delivers, but I tend to prefer his more "heavy" side.
