Wojciech Has, Rekopis znaleziony w Saragossie (The Saragossa Manuscript), 1965

If you like stories within stories within stories (Don Quixote, Arabian Nights, etc) this one's for you - the book it's based on too, by Jan Potocki (1761 - 1815).

A classic!
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this masterpiece in further detail......

I'm about a third of the way into the book, and at that speed I read I expect to be through some time in late November.. 2017:) But so far from what I can tell, the film remains pretty faithful to the structure and spirit of the Potocki. I love the way the stories interconnect, and the way Has plays on their similarities by using the same decor, same outdoor locations and even the same camera moves for different stories. The decor is terrific - Cocteau and Jodorowsky come to mind, all those skull goblets and bleached bones - and Has keeps up a cracking pace (inevitable, since he has so much material to get through): the three hours fly by.
Read the book, Tom?
I wish I had the time to read it.....what, with two kids running my life at the moment, I suspect it'll be a while before I find enough time to sit down and read it in peace....

The Girl At The Monceau Bakery (Rohmer, 1963) - Amusing, held my interest, but slight. Didnt get much out of this. Only 20 minutes long.

Image
Suzanne's Career (Rohmer, 1963) - Meh. Again, it held my interest, mostly because of the pretty though dated shots of Parisian cafe society. The characters were a bit less interesting.

Do yourself a favour and lose the book on a train ride in summer 2016. The denouement is one of the biggest letdowns in literary history.

I like Nevsky. I like the Prokovief and the battle scenes. And there's not as many of those weird, mugging close-ups as there are in other Prokofiev-Eisenstein collaborations that could be named.

Gunvor Grundel Nelson - My Name is Oona (1969)

Beautiful images and the soundtrack (by Steve Reich) worked quite well actually. You can see it in not so great quality here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1flb3 ... -oona-1969

Yeah whenever she unleashes those huge melon tits I smile on the inside remembering having to wonder why my parents let me see 48 Hours (an utter classic) and wouldn't let me see TP.
