A Woman Under The Influence (Cassavetes, 1974) - First experience with Cassavetes. Remarkable performances by Faulk and Rowlands. It would have been too easy to portray Faulk as the monster abusive husband, and he's obviously much more complicated than that. I dont think there's any doubt he loves her deeply, but cannot express or receive love in meaningful way. When he trying to keep the family from spinning out of control, and things dont go the way he intends them, he can only express himself physically. Its kind of the Raging Bull syndrome. I love the trip to the beach, so desperate.

Rowlands is phenomenal. Her line between quirky and bizarre and dangerous is so subtle that you often miss it. The spaghetti dinner with Faulk's co-workers and Rowlands is well done. The line between jocularity and discomfort is almost invisible. Her homecoming is handled well, I love the supporting cast including Cassevetes' mom, who plays Faulks mother.

The soundtrack is great, very minimal but very effective. The camerawork which gets a lot of flack is fine I thought, very Dogme 95 or french new wave, can be unsteady at times, and quickly drifts into focus on people, but given the scenes, its fine, great even. I love the natural lighting. I thought the editing was OK - at 2:20, it could have been trimmed a bit, felt a bit long, but that's a minor complaint. Very little to criticize with this movie.

With The Long Goodbye, I'm on kind of a roll with 70s masterpieces. Got Chinese Bookie at home, so maybe I'll watch that next. Also queued up Faces. Any others? Maybe I should start a Cassevetes thread.

A Simple Plan (Raimi, 1998) - This was our "date movie" on Sat night. Its the kind of thing Hollywood does well, or can do well. Tightly plotted thrillers, with a semblence of character depth, and a pretty standard twist ending. Paxton is wood, which works in this role. Thorton plays Darryl from the Bob Newhart Show. Bridget Fonda plays Lady Macbeth. All characters are made to seem like they have depth and a backstory, but none do. This is a plot driven movie. Greed, bad choices, all your standard Coen Brothers material. Decent, I wont recommend it, but I wont discourage you from seeing it if this is what you are in the mood for.

there are two versions of that, do you have both?

my favorite is the shorter one (& my fave of his so far), though nowadays most attention is given to the original 1976 version, mostly because it came first & (imo) not because it was the artists' vision or because it's better or anything

Have a divx of "husbands" lying around, should get around to watching it soon

btw, if any of you north-american moviebuffs haven't got the criterion Cassavetes box, now is the time:
$58 on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/John-Cassavetes-I ... 127&sr=1-1). It's worth every cent & you'll be rolling in your beds with nightmares if the price goes up & you've missed it

Burn After Reading (Coen(s), 2008)

Caught a matinee of this yesterday between classes... I had kind of forced myself to keep my expectations low, but it was really quite good. A lot of fun to watch the thing unfold.

Much funnier than I was expecting, too... with a very dark sensibility (Clooney unveiling his 'project' in the basement was shocking and hilarious... made my mouth hang open!).

Probably not my favourite Scorsese movie, but still damn good. I got this together with This Is Spinal Tap for $10... How could I go wrong? ;)

I was thinking about starting a Tati thread a couple months ago...

I had rented M. Hulot's Holiday and found it really underwhelming. I've often read pieces that compare him to Keaton and Chaplin (both of who's work, particularly Keaton's, I generally like a lot), but with the exception of a couple standout scenes I just found the film tedious. What are people's opinions on Tati? Any thoughts on his best films?
