Nyman did the sound track if I remember..Lots of pentatonic, hold down the sustain pedal stuff...If I remember rightly, he made a "concerto" out of the theme...

I don't like Nyman, but I actually liked that film..It got that misty NZ west coast vibe right and I liked Keitel as a pakeha Maori..

As we're moving into big budget movies, can I nominate an entire genre?

I'm thinking of the bio-pic. They're almost all terrible, but the really hyped ones, like Gandhi or Chaplain, are particularly bad.

Oh yes...and yes.

My problem is that a good "bad" movie isn't boring..most of those biopics are..

You're right. Here's one that it's hard to stop watching:

and then there's this:

and then there's the "this is not a biopic" subgenre which features Todd Haynes' films like I'm Not There, Velvet Goldmine and Superstar ... the latter actually made me kinda appreciate The Carpenters' music.

But in no way shape or form would I call Weekend a bad movie ... it's probably what I'd vote for best film ever. It also inspired me to play drums.

But I'm also a sucker for movies about unnaturally giant animals attacking, like this one:

Night of the Lepus ... Them! ... and just saw this (probably comparable to the sequel to Anaconda, which I haven't seen):

Then you should definitely see this star-studded crapfest:

Uh oh. Jon's Herzog aversion is about to come smack up against his Lynch-love if http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... b74787867d this article is accurate! Yowzah.

Oh I did! Frankenfish was a smidgen worse ... and it goes without saying that I've seen Snakes on a Plane. However, I prefer Night of the Lepus and Them! to the other three. I think it has to do with the obvious fakeness of the earlier films.

[not sure what I'm doing wrong to disable the linkage....]
yeah, I saw that news the other day, should be interesting.

don't get me wrong, I like Herzog quite a bit and even think that a handful of his films are pretty much genius. but I can't get behind everything he's done universally, that's all I'm saying. Even Dwarves Start Small is probably the least enjoyable/satisfying/entertaining/whatever of his films that I've seen, and I don't believe in the 'auteur theory', where the worst films from great directors are ranked higher than the best from 'non-great' directors.

have you seen Even Dwarves, Brian?

Here's one to look forward to. It's coming out in few weeks but I had the fortune/misfortune (I can't decide) to see it at a film festival about a month or so ago. It's inspired by the true events that occurred in Fort Worth but done as a horror movie that shows how they would have liked for it to have turned out instead of how it really did. I can't decide whether the unintentional laughs are actually intentional or at least can't be helped because the true story is so ridiculous to begin with.

Don't know if you remember, but after I watched 'Even Dwarves...', it was probably 3 or 4 weeks before I could watch another movie. I'm not easily rattled, either. First time I'd had that experience since 'Gummo'.
I'd like to see the numbers on games they should have won if they scored all those guys they do get on base in games they are hitting.

I hadn't thought about it for years, but I remember Pink Flamingos having that effect on me.

I'd like to refrain again, I liked the cinematic ideas presented on Week End and how they were carried out, also i felt close to the messages but i would admit it was a tough viewing, not the kind of 'tough' of watching a really well made horror film or quasi horror or whatever. It was sort of avantgard against avantgard, it insists on going against any pathos. many, way too many references to the French revolution, which in order to understand one must be moderately well read in.

I remember seeing a really horrific version of a Conrad short story called something like "The Duel" many years ago.

Keith Carradine is a painrfully bad actor. You have to watch movies like that covering your eyes and peeking between your fingers now and then.

Wasn't Harvey Kietel in it as well? I saw this a long time ago..

If I'm not mistaken it's an early Ridley Scott film..
