Abel Ferrara, Welcome to New York, 2014
Depardieu lets his body flop out like a suitcase falling out of a wardrobe. I guess you have to admire his guts (no pun intended), but it seems he's changed his mind and now regrets making this rushed and incoherent film based closely (sometimes too closely) on the Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair. It's the wife who comes off worst though - film's not bad for the first hour, but gets mighty annoying when Jacqueline Bisset shows up. Don't know what axe Ferrara was trying to grind, but the film flopped about as miserably as Gérard's belly
Joseph Losey, These Are The Damned, 1963
Another one of the oddities in the Losey oeuvre (along with Boom, Secret Ceremony and Figures in a Landscape..), half teen rebel biker gang flick, half Cold War sci-fi horror. The latter wins out, as it turns out, and the damned in question aren't Oliver Reed's leather-clad chums but.. ah, won't spoil it for you.. Let's just say I love films with radioactive mutant kids...
George Sluizer, Spoorloos ("The Vanishing"), 1988
Discovered this because someone wrote that Gone Girl had ripped it off.. hm, maybe, hard to see more than a faint resemblance (you could make a stronger case for The Collector, I reckon), but this is about a thousand times better. Definitely one to stick in Michel Chion's "Cinema and Morality 101" class. Haven't seen the American remake - apparently Sluizer changed the ending, and I fear the worst. Chilling stuff, check it out.
Werner Herzog, Little Dieter Needs To Fly, 1997
Another one Werner's jolly romps in the jungle, as Dieter tells the true story of his escape from a PoW camp in Vietnam. I rather preferred Julianes Sturz in den Dschungel myself.
