worst american re-title ever. i don't think it's fair to say it's the only answer. i'm sure there are plenty of films with surprise endings and i'd prefer variation over one single "acceptable" answer.

You're right, the way the question is worded with "Favorite" in there, of course its opinion. I read it incorrectly as "most shocking / surprising" which is a bit different. I've seen a fair share of films, nothing even comes close to A Ma Soeur in terms of sheer surprise shock value, and I guess that's the way Breillat wanted it.

As Dan pointed out, the plane crash that takes out Paula and then Joey is pretty laughably absurd.

À Ma Sœur! is a good choice, but it doesn't strike me as being any less absurd then the Night Moves ending (leaving a witness seems just as illogical as trying to fly a plane and shoot a gun with a broken arm). both films rely on an allegorical bent and the unstable nature of desperate men to pull off the shock/surprise. also, i think Dan was referring to North By Northwest, not Night Moves.

Not really.

As I said, I've managed to avoid Truffaut's entire output so far, except for a few minutes of Stolen Kisses. Otherwise, any movie by Gaspar Noé. They might be formally brilliant, but I wouldn't be interested in a film made by a guy who seems - at least to me - to be a jerk.

Nobody's Fool by Robert Benton seems obvious, but two other films that come to mind and that seems as deserving of the title are The Yellow Sea by Na Hong-jin and Sing A Song of Sex by Nagisa Oshima.
