Best/most informed magazines/newspapers?

I bought Foreign Affairs and have peeked a bit at The New Yorker.

What newspapers/magazines can you guys recommend as the best from a serious journalistic output with good research, philosophical debates/insights etc. ?

I subscribe for a year at a time to the Economist every couple of years, it's still really well put together. it takes a good amount of time to even read through quickly each week, though, which is why I always let my subscription lapse.

I do subscribe to the New Yorker and have for most of the last 20-25 years, it's also still completely worthwhile, although some weeks are better than others.

I've been a happy subscriber to the International New York Times (previously the International Herald Tribune) for a couple of years. It isn't perfect, but

+ I don't know of any better daily publication.
+ it is global in scope
+ it has excellent, well researched, long articles a couple of times a week, at times even stellar


I'm not sure how it compares to the regular NYT though, or how that newspaper comes across to US citizens.

On the more scientific/philosophical side, http://nautil.us has been very consistent.

The best/most informed goes with interests. I've not read enough journals/magazines to compare contents of more than a few.

Foreign Affairs is U.S. establishment press along the lines of New York Times.

Lapham's Quarterly isn't monthly. "The founder and editor of Lapham's Quarterly, Lewis H. Lapham is also editor emeritus of Harper's Magazine." (http://www.laphamsquarterly.org/issues) It's topical - most of the Spring 2014 issue abridged anthological recourse to revolutionary texts. It's less modern than Foreign Affairs, but timely.

Independent monthly printed magazine at Counterpunch.org. Radical with a few page-length mainstay columns, and longer articles, backs a culture that Foreign Affairs would overlook.

The New Left Review is very good.
