Yuko also says that many of the writers considered to be great in Japan have been extremely hermetic and borderline crazy, so when people see Murakami, who is into eating healthy and running marathons and used to run a jazz club, it's hard for them to reconcile that with their image of what a great writer should be.

yeah. that's basically what i figured. just isn't easy to classify, identify with so they throw a generic dismissal at it. must make it even wierder for traditionalists that such 'strange' writing comes from a 'normal' guy.

bumped after a few years, to complain at how slow the English translations of his work is. he has three volumes of '1Q84' out in Japanese, the first two out last summer, the third just out, none close to English yet. here is a pic of volume 3:
