I still think ebookoid is pretty cool. Starting in the beginning of January, they will be a membership run site, $10 a month gets you UNLIMITED books to download, they are promoting it as an "All you can read" thing because people were complaining about paying $0.99 for a book...

Do you still have to pay in bitcoins or some other arcane method?

Yeah, I believe bitcoins still through purchasing amazon.com gift cards. Pretty classy.

I'm not sure about using Amazon gift cards as currency. Surely someone at Amazon must be aware of Ebookoid, and desirous to shut it down. It may be a legal grey area though, since Ebookoid is merely doing what Amazon itself has contemplated (i.e. 'reselling' ebooks), and the new model is analogous to Spotify (with the difference that books can be stockpiled for later use).

It seems the ethical debate about sharing books has lagged behind the music one. The economic reality is the same: the value of an infinitely reproducible file reduces to zero unless an artificial scarcity can be imposed. The publishing world has the advantage that there is still no 'killer' format: PDFs may preserve the printed page layout (with fonts, graphics, etc) but are cumbersome to read on a handheld device and almost impossible to convert; EPUBs/MOBIs have the opposite virtues – small and scalable, but not really suited to texts with lots of illustrations or complex layouts (textbooks, poetry).
