I still can't believe I saw Schnee performed live at the legendary erstquake festival at the Tonic in NYC years ago. One of the most moving performances I have ever been to. I remember there was an airplane flying overhead and that after the show I went back to my hostel (this was before AirBnB) and slept in a bathtub listening to the Cosmo "Tears" album that I purchased at the merch table...

Excellent composer, but too much piano and too many "art songs" on this disk for my taste.

More stuff I haven't heard in awhile.

Image

This disk is very unusual, with its Brittenesque concept and orchestration (voice piano, church organ, percussion, bass). But with the exception of maybe two or three of its 16 tracks, I think it's mostly pretty bad. The vocalist, Lena Willemark, relies very heavily on Celtic ornamentation that, to me, seems almost always out of place in this context. Some of the playing is nice and a little less of the composition is also. But with these performers and nice available sounds, it could have been better, IMO.

ImageImage

This OTOH, remains a terrific disc. Those who miss Live-Evil type stuff, complete with wah-wah, ring modulation, etc. but want it to be more abstract, less predictable and maybe have an added mellotron and the occasional mildly demented vocal, should give this a listen if they haven't heard it yet. It's a particular fave of mine, anyhow.

Steve,

Carol gets emails from this John {##} guy as an alum of Crawford High in San Diego. Link below will take you to Top 40 surveys of San Diego stations. The Mighty 690, XEAK (transmitter was in Tiajuana, thus the X call letter) was the first rock station I listened to, starting as an 8 year old in 1958. Photo quality is poor so you have to expand view to 150% to read the XEAK surveys. XEAK changed to all news circa 1961 so I switched to KCBQ until we move to NJ Summer 62. I suffered with 77 WABC and its limited play list until I discovered WMCA May 1963, remaining a loyal listener until we moved to Marin August 1965.

Kyoka - Ish
(as newly acquired vinyl)

new stuff for me... I came via Tujiko Noriko/Aoki Takamasa to this ep.

The first track/side with the robotic voice is... shitty in my book. On Youtube I stumbled upon one track of this ep I found amazing... https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=74&v=TSAZxps2XwY
