The Roots Of Chicha, Psychedelic Cumbias from Perú

It's funny how I used to not like this stuff and now I find some of it fascinating. I suppose it's what not finding it out as often during one's dayli life does...

They're playing tonight in Northampton, and am checking them out now on spotify, they don't sound too bad, just not sure if it's something I'd go see live.

Lord Huron, kind of sounds like all the new MGMT/Tame Impala indie, but it's really not that bad. It just sounds like something I've heard too much of recently through other bands. Not sure if I'm going to see them (I figured out that cool events around here only happen about twice a month if that.)

Miles Davis -- Rubberband (a very mixed bag, a shelved album from 1985 goosed up with modern effects by the original producers, sometimes to good effect but more often to create an overproduced sound. Vocals by Lalah Hathaway and Ledisi take the parts originally intended for Chaka Khan and Al Jarreau, not crazy about any of the vocal tracks. But there are some dynamite instrumental jazz-funk tracks with some superb playing by Miles -- check out the last three tracks. Not one of the great albums, but some of the best funk Miles ever recorded.

I don't have a system. If I have a long drive to and from a gig, I'll pick music I like to drive to. I listen to all new acquisitions twice (only log the first time here) before shelving it, so a lot of listens are second listens to recently purchased discs which don't show up here. When I file the discs away, I often come across adjacent artists or albums I like but haven't heard in a while (Thomas Chapin above). Some of the selections are as much 'education' as pleasure listening -- since I do a lot of DJing at my dances I try to keep up with the new stuff (like the NOW That's What I Call Music series, which are like the old K-tel collections of hits), new artists that grab me, or old artists I've never really caught up with (just ordered comps of Gene Autry and Eddie Fisher, neither of whom I've been especially into but both of whom dominated their fields for a time, and belong in my collection. Gene Autry came into view because of the Ken Burns country series I'm watching, and Eddie Fisher . . . a song called Dungaree Doll popped into my head the other day, came out in '55 when I was 11, probably haven't thought of it in 60 years . . . took it as a sign to catch up on Fisher, who had 17 top ten hits in the early 50s and was like a god in the Jewish neighborhoods of Brooklyn. I have bizarre notion that when I get too old to lead dances, like when I'm 105, I'll turn to radio DJing and will want to have a comprehensive collection.

I go through periods of playing mostly classical, or country, or doo wop . . . currently jazz is my fallback genre. Neglected groupings build up in my mind and then I pull a bunch of albums and listen to them. Recently did that with King label Doo Wop, feel it coming for Mozart piano sonatas and concertos. And there are certain albums and artists -- Bach, Mingus, Kuryokhin, Miles, Sam Cooke, others -- that I need at least a minimum fix of every once in a while.

And sometimes somebody I haven't thought of in a while pops into my head and I have to hear them now -- currently going on for me with ROVA.

And my kids, friends, and dancers are constantly recommending new songs, artists and albums to me, which gets me talking about related music. A dancer recently sent me an e-mail of a new, Mongolian punk/ throat-singing rock group, only so-so but reminded me to revisit Ondar. And a discussion at tonight's dance with a dancer about that Burns' series led to my telling them about Roger Miller's late career Broadway show based on Huckleberry Finn. (Funny story from the series -- interviewer, knowing that Miller was a speed freak, asks his manager how many hours he had been awake at this point, and the manager replies, "I've only been with him a year-and-a-half, before that I can't say."
