it's just one thread, no one forced you to read it or post. start a more compelling one if you'd like the board to go in a different direction.

I kind of want to play this game, but I shouldn't. I might try to pick my five favorite single disc releases, though.

ok, just because Massimo chimed in, here are my four picks of single disc Ersts as of now.

056: Ami Yoshida/Toshimaru Nakamura-Soba to Bara
EL011: Keith Rowe-September
058: Annette Krebs/Taku Unami-motubachii
055: Radu Malfatti/Klaus Filip-imaoto

#5 is too hard for me, quite a few ways I could go there.

Massimo, what label would you rather we have a thread about? Favorite releases on Cash Money Records?

but I might as well chime in with a rapid decision list as part of the crew who's heard everything on erstwhile...

arbitrarily in release order. and for the complication of it, limiting to single disc albums too.

012: Thomas Lehn/Marcus Schmickler - Bart
024: Cosmos - Tears
EL003: Burkhard Stangl/Christof Kurzmann - schnee_live
052: Graham Lambkin/Jason Lescalleet - The Breadwinner
062: Taku Unami/Takahiro Kawaguchi - Teatro Assente

different strokes for different folks but I'm honestly pretty surprised to see two votes already for Air Supply over The Breadwinner if you're gonna include one of that duo's albums.

C"mon Massimo, you know who runs IHM, so there's no need to feign indignation. Nothing stopping you posting a Five Favourite Def Jam or Five Favourite BYG Actuel thread, as someone hinted above. FWIW I wouldn't attempt to answer this until I'd gone through them all again (and so far I've got as far as 028), but of those first few the one I've enjoyed most so far is the Cosmos.

Ha! fair enough, Dan.

Richard, I just really don't like these kinds of threads, whatever the label. It just seems like more canon-building to me....

I think we're a little late to the "canon-building" game. I mean. Jon's been running erstwhile for over a decade. This is the kind of thing that happens when a label is successful in a niche for so long.

In not so random order:

Michael Pisaro/Toshiya Tsunoda: crosshatches (def. my record of the year for 2012)
Graham Lambkin/Jason Lescalleet: The Breadwinner
4g: Cloud
Günter Müller/Otomo Yoshihide: Time Travel
Polwechsel/Fennesz: Wrapped Island

(hope btw that the promised stand alone release of Müller/Yoshihide's Tint still will be coming at some point)

I never promised this and almost certainly won't be doing it, although Dan W likes to ask for it every few years. but as I say every time he brings it up, I still have individual copies from the box set available of this if anyone is interested, they can get in touch.

I hadn't asked for it this time round, actually.. but since you mention it.. :)
Nice to see A View From The Window mentioned up there, looking forward to returning to that one. Always felt it got a bit overlooked in favour of more accessible offerings likecloud.

1. 055 - Radu Malfatti and Klaus Filip, 'Imaoto'
2. 060-3 - Radu Malfatti and Keith Rowe, 'phi'
3. ES002 - Toshimaru Nakamura, 'Maruto'
4. 054-2 - Keith Rowe and Sachiko M, 'Contact
5. 021 - MIMEO and John Tilbury, 'The hands of Caravaggio'

it's a bit too soon to include EL011 - Keith Rowe, 'September' in there, most anticipated by me is 069 - John Wall and Lee Patterson; and I would also like to add that choosing my 5 least favourite might have been easier. Then again, maybe not.

Agree with most releases listed here.
My first encounter with the label was with The World Turned Upside Down, Eh and Too beautiful to burn. extravagantly unexpected music for any newcomer.
For my favorites I should also add Crosshatches, and the Amplify set, which I think is an important document, for new music regardless of genre/label.

So, regardless of the alleged bias of this forum :) , the number of "essential" releases on the label is remarkable. as is Jon's function of putting together such diverse artists with such a minimal budget.

The thread would be more annoying if it were easier to pick just 5!
Here were my tough choices:

008: Burkhard Stangl/Christof Kurzmann Schnee
EL005-3 (triple CD): Keith Rowe/Sachiko M/Toshimaru Nakamura/Otomo Yoshihide
049-2 (double CD): ErikM/Dieb13 chaos club
060-3 (triple CD): Radu Malfatti/Keith Rowe Φ
EL011: Keith Rowe September

* I have yet to order the last Erstlive, but have owned and heard the rest of the catalog.
