I don't like making short lists of favorite albums unless it's a very specific and narrow area, but two I'd almost certainly put on any list along these lines would be Taku Sugimoto-Opposite and Tetuzi Akiyama-Relator, both sadly long OOP.

I've always really, really loved the guitar on Willie Nelson's Who'll Buy My Memories (the IRS tapes). And Joseph Spence's Happy All the Time and Joseph Spence and the Pinder Family.

Maybe not my favorite but certainly one of them, and one that routinely goes underappreciated

Off the top of my head...

Derek Bailey: Aida
Sonny Sharrock: Ask the Ages
Michael Perlowin: Firebird Suite
King Crimson: Discipline
Fred Frith: To Sail, to Sail
Henry Kaiser/Jim O'Rourke: Tomorrow Knows Where You Live
Frank Zappa: Hot Rats
Captain Beefheart: Trout Mask Replica
Shawn Lane/Jonas Hellborg: Temporal Analogues of Paradise
Kevin Drumm: s/t

...that's already 10 but something by Eugene Chadbourne could've been included, Keiji Haino, Davey Williams, Caspar Brötzmann, and many more luminaries I'm forgetting right now.

agree, the akiyama track on that compilation is sublime and about 100 years ahead of the other tracks. also agree on 'Sings', arguably Mota's best recording under his name so far.

been playing Dave Holland's juzz/funk Extensions recently, there is a ton of guitar there (kevin eubanks) specifically a tune 'the oracle' which is mind bending.
and Frisell's 'Gone, Just Like A Train'.

Bailey + Parker: The London Concert ('75)
King Crimson: U.S.A.
Frank Zappa: Them or Us (alone for the solo on "Truck Driver Divorce")
Frank Zappa: Joe's Garage II+III
Hans Reichel: Bonobo
Melt-Banana: Charlie
Deerhoof: The Man, the King, the Girl
Sonic Youth: Kill Yr Idols
Brötzmann/Brötzmann: Last Home
Velvet Underground: White Light/White Heat
Arto Lindsay: Aggregates 1-26
(which reflects my current preference for rock music over classical stuff & free jazz)

Hmm... stuff that I rarely listen to these days, but which sure left an impression on me back then: John McLaughlin on the Mahavishnu Orchestra's Inner Mounting Flame and Allan Holdsworth on a few tracks on Gong's Gazeuse.

I also should have added some classical compilation/interpreter's portrait CD... something including stuff by Milton Babbitt, Hans Werner Henze, maybe Elliott Carter, Brian Ferneyhough, Aldo Clementi.
. . . .

Forgot Hans Reichel, good one...
I've also enjoyed Elliott Sharp's prowess on the instrument at times, especially on his solo Sferics record, all fretless guitar.
