Most Accessible Onkyo/EAI Music...

Hi, I'm trying to put together a small mix for someone who is mostly into "Indie Rock" but who has interest in learning more about what I'll broadly call "Onkyo/EAI" music. I was trying to stick with things that are relatively "pure breed" (I want to stay away from Black Dice, Animal Collective, etc) but I want to choose things that remain accessible to someone not used to that kind of thing.

All I've come up with so far is Ground Zero (probably something off of Live 1992+), Jason Lescalleet (off The Pilgrim), and Jawwaad Taylor.

Anyway, I would be appreciative of any suggestions of music pieces or artists. Thanks.

ps - (I know genre classifications are clumsy and imperfect. Don't worry about letting me know how clumsy genres are; I already know that.) :)

Fennesz solo records like Endless Summer and Venice? Taku Sugimoto-Opposite?

Fennesz might be a good idea. I was trying to help this person see that this music stands distinct from stuff he might have heard on Pitchfork, but a touch of that might be good. Thanks.

Jon Abbey: sorry if this is a dumb question but is the idea behind "ErstPop" releases that they are more accessible than standard releases on the label?

Yes, a track off TBTB would be a good one too. Then maybe a track from "Cloud" by 4G to round out the pack. And a vintage cut from Pauline Oliveros or maybe from the Sextant album by Herbie Hancock.

I will check out the Taku Unami also.

Thanks again.

no, I don't really think about the concept of 'accessible', since I think it's different for everyone, and sometimes it's very surprising (I know some people entered this area via Sachiko M-related projects, for instance).

ErstPop projects are in an area between song forms and the Erstwhile world, so it's more about the structure and the presence of vocals (and not Ami-like vocals) than whether they're accessible or not.

Jon Abbey: understood. I could be wrong but I think traditional "pop songs" are what this person is used to, if the music that they themselves create is any indicator. But I know what you mean about people surprising you.

mudd: No prob. We'll definitely catch up sooner or later.

the second album (pictured at that link) is a little goofy, though not nearly as goofy as the cover art. cut-ups and hip hop handicapping. it's also not that strong an album.

their first album 'songs from the sea of love', is sweet and melodic someone in fennesz's direction but with more variety to the sound. i'm very fond of it.

"If anything, perhaps it errs on the sweet side of things, but it’s certainly a warm bath, something neophytes to the genre could quite possibly pick up on. The closing minutes of the second track are almost radio-friendly! (well, not quite…)."

Don't remember The Flirts as being all that easy listening, but haven't heard it for ages. Thanks for reminding me to go back to it. Good calls, all - I'd add the two Akiyama quartet / quintet releases on Sofa, Erst 032 (open, w/ Davis, Durrant, Wastell), and the first two Nakamura No Input Mixing Board albums, if you can still find copies.

I don't think "easy listening" is a good route for an indie rocker to get into improvised music. The texture and complexity of The Flirts' sound palette is a pretty good intro to the world of electronic music that this thread seems to be about, and makes it clear how it differs from what we usually think of when we talk about "noise" music.

All right, all right, but what's the difference for you between "accessible" and "easy listening"? Far as I'm concerned, they're the same thing.

Huh. I don't find "easy listening" music "accessible" at all.
