Your all time top 10

Post by F&B »

Within all genres, what are the 10 best albums you own?

Looking for inspiration for some essential listening experiences.

Hahaha, I can't resist daft questions like this one (much more fun that trying to pick a Best Of for the year in question). Tried a Top 40 eight years ago, which I'm still more or less happy with (though the exclusion of Parliament / Funkadelic is utterly unforgiveable)
http://www.paristransatlantic.com/magaz ... top40.html
But, um, perhaps you're looking for more "challenging" music?

Jotting down ten in thirty seconds, without thinking. Maybe not the "best" - but they are all "essential". No preferential order.

GENESIS – Trespass
FRANK ZAPPA – Joe’s Garage (entire set)
STEVE REICH – Music For 18 Musicians
PHILIP GLASS – Music With Changing Parts
STEPHEN SCOTT – Vikings Of The Sunrise
PHILL NIBLOCK – Touch Three
ELIANE RADIGUE – Trilogie De La Mort
KLAUS WIESE – Space
ROLAND KAYN – Tektra
MIRROR - Front Row Centre
Reserves:
HENRY COW - In Praise Of Learning
HATFIELD AND THE NORTH - Hatfield And The North
NATIONAL HEALTH - Complete
ALLAN HOLDSWORTH - Atavachron
MADONNA - True Blue (...just kidding!)

However, I can't really list my top ten, but only some of the records that for several reasons changed the way I look at music, like

Torture Garden - Naked City
Reign In Blood - Slayer
Dean Roberts - All Cracked Medias
Taku Sugimoto - Italia
Alvin Lucier - I'm sitting in a room
This Heat - Deceit

Sure, but I am quite doubtful about Madonna's "essential" status as far as the needs of the thread's initiator are concerned.

Melt-Banana: Charlie
King Crimson: USA
Captain Beefheart: Trout Mask Replica
Gunter Hampel: 8th of July
Manfred Schoof: European Echoes
Peter Brötzmann: Machine Gun
Schlippenbach Trio: Detto Fra Di Noi
Steve Lacy: The Owl
Luigi Nono: probably the collegno-CD which includes "Varianti"
Le Domaine musical: 1956-1967 Volume 1 (crisp historical analogue recordings focussing on 50s/early 60s compositions of Stockhausen, Pousseur, Berio, Boulez, Messiaen etc)

- not necessarily "the best" albums by those artists, but some which have a certain significance to my own musical development

my suggestion would be to create your own essential listening experiences as it can be very subjective with experimental music.

Thanks for all the suggestions. As expected there are tons of artists to check out I haven't heard about, and now I know at least someone is totally devoted to this record, so that must be some kind of guarantee that it could be very good!

2) Thelonious Monk: Monk's Music
3) Can: Tago Mago or Future Days or Ege Bamyasi
4) Rowe, Sachiko M, Toshi Nakamura, Oshihide: 3 CD live
5) Pavement: Slanted and Enchanted
6) AMM: Live in Allentown
7) Joe Maneri: Coming Down The Mountain
8) SME: A new Distance
9) Evan Parker, John Edwards & Mark Sanders: The Two Seasons

This is nearly impossible with a collection that runs into the six figures,
but these were ultra-major stepping (s)tones that are still the top five
(and actually in descending order - amazingly so):

• Karlheinz Stockhausen: Hymnen
• Pierre Henry - Apocalypse de Jean
• Iannis Xenakis: Bohor (LP version!)
• François Bayle: Toupie Dans Le Ciel
• John Cage & Maryanne Amacher: Empty Words/Close Up

6 figures?

I'm new here, didn't want to but I may as well begin in this thread. So mine would be (not sure the list even makes sense to me)

Joanna Newsom - Ys
The Magnetic Fields - The Wayward Bus
Belle and Sebastian - If you're feeling sinister
Freestyle Fellowship - Innercity Griots
Björk - Medulla
Maher Shalal Hash Baz - L'autre cap
Kazumi Nikaido - Mata Otoshimashitayo
Big Blood & The Bleeding Hearts - s/t
The Legendary Pink Dots - Asylum
Tim Buckley - Goodbye and Hello

Reserve: The Sirens Wave (Nalle), Medasi (Haki R. Madhubuti and Nation: Afrikan Reveration Arts Ensemble), Dolmen Music (Meredith Monk), The Unquiet Grave (Andrew Rowan Summers), Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures: Taken From the Vaults, Vol. 1 (VA), Aquemini (Outkast), How to measure a planet (The Gathering)...

doing the math on that, 100,000 items (at a minimum), let's say 40 minutes on average, that's 4 million minutes of music. at six hours of listening every single day, that would take someone 45 years just to listen to everything once.
