a lot of you have probably noticed already that sometimes the word 'image' shows up instead of the picture you intended to post. this is phpbb3's effort to limit overuse of the dwindling supply of red xs available today - your image isn't displayable. The problem might be an error in the tag, but more and more often the problem at hand is that the image you are posting is hosted on one of a number of sites that restrict 'hot linking', or direct links to images on their site. sites of this sort include http://rateyourmusic.com and discogs, along with any blogspot site that hosts them images on blogspot. it can be difficult to spot problem sites directly from a google image search, but unfortunately bad links and undisplayable images can make threads pretty hard to read.

so i'm posting this announcement to remind everyone to make sure images that you post display correctly. furthermore, it would help a lot to include a note describing the content of the image in case it isn't displayable on another poster's connection.

Something else that strikes me as useful would be to use the text anyway (either with or without the image), since that means the references to musicians and records will be searchable in the archive in future. It's possible that people are doing searches and coming up with nothing when in fact the original reference is simply hidden in a picture. Images are also impermanent, as anyone reading and bumping old threads will discover.

Some of these things are not really being borne in mind, particularly in the Now Playing thread. Images with obscure text (or no text) or only partially readable text are no more helpful than broken links.

Sometimes they do in Preview, but disappear later. Any way to check that in advance, Mark?

That probably means they're still in your browser's cache, Dan, from when you visited the site that's actually serving the images up.
