i hate Ocora

label is definitely massive enough to merit it's own thread... really hard to know where to begin or where to go from there...

tips?

one thing that seems neat about it is that it seems to be not only historically relevant but also on a contemporary tip from time to time as well, as some of the nice stuff i've come across (like Ari Polyphonies, or the Fulani Hoddu) is pretty recent.

like Quammie, i've been into some of the Madagascar releases, and at present i'd say my main focus is Africa--but they really do have stuff all over the place so any guidance anywhere would be great.

Classic! Especially the rumbling of the man on the cover.

silly answer, but i think the best place to find their releases is good 2nd hand vinyl shops

they've released a ton, many of them have yet to be reissued on CD and the vinyl that's around is relatively approachable. in europe at least

forced exposure seems to be carrying the cds in the US

I would start here

Image

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Paris Concert...as a well recorded document of the master's live performance, this is essential.

I would follow that up with Central Africa Musical Anthology of the Aka Pygmies, anything they've released from Cuba...there's a couple of great titles from China.
Don't miss anything they've released from Madagascar either....priceless!
Excellent label! It's a shame they get shoddy distribution though :(

the people have spoken mark, forced exposure has a good amount of em. Otherwise rip cds from public libraries thats what I do.

Ones I have and like and recommend

VA - Cameroon; Flutes of The Mandara Mountains (title explains it...this is really odd stuff)
VA - Afrique Complaintes et Incantations (central africa (Cameroon, Congo and some other spots)
VA - Cap Vert un Archipel de Musique (music from Cape Verde Island(s) that i recently got, amazing stuff)
VA - Pays Antandroy (Madagascar)
VA - Pays Mikea (Madagascar)
VA - Pays Merina (Pays=its from Madagascar, all of them are beautiful)

stuff i have but need to listen to more:
Africa Anthologie de la Musique du Niger
Inde du Nord - Balaram Pathak
china - turkestan - xinjiang music of the uyghurs
turgun alimatov - ouzbekistan

i want a complete discog of this label...they have like 600 releases or something. Discogs list is really weird and confusing. Easily one of the best labels ever.

I just found out about this label days ago through the differentwaters blog. Already recommended are the OOP Cameroun and the Burundi records. The Burundi is the one that I find most amazing - haunting and mysterious.
http://differentwaters.blogspot.com/200 ... art-1.html
Search through the entire blog - there are more OOP Ocora releases contained. Fantastic.

edit: If you know any, please post other blogs that contain Ocora music. Thanks.

I think the Wagogo Entertainment Music from Tanzania disc might be my favorite on the label. The string pieces are absolutely hypnotic - they actually remind me of early Arnold Dreyblatt.

Highly recommended.

Periya Melam, Inde du Sud: Temple de Chidambaram.

This one is really good, a South Indian Carnatic ensemble made up of a melodic instrument (a nagaswaram, an ancient reed instrument not a million miles from a soprano saxophone sound), a drone, and a couple of percussion players. This kind of group tends to play at social events like weddings and funerals as well as in temples and at religious services. The drumming here on the tavil drum (I think that's one on the left of the picture) is fierce, pounding and intricate. The epic half-hour second piece has long unfurling lines for two nagaswaram players in call and response style and in direct imitative phrases that ratchet up the energy as they're passed from player to player.

This is one of my very favorite CDs. His voice is so intense and beautiful, and I love the frame drum playing and stringed instruments. Iranian and Azeri music is tops for me.

Ocora, which could not have existed without French government subsidy, is a notable example of state funding being put to good use. My favourite is possibly this Japanese gaguku disc, particularly for the dissonant drones of the sho mouthorgan:

He did a great rock(!)-EP with Azeri proggers ColDünya, took me a few spins as it seems weird at first (muğam tonalities in rock, liek wtf?) but I'm totally hooked now. Makes the Buckley collab look like a circus-act really, having that guy sitting in a corner to 'do his thing'. :?
