Re: is EAI noise?
A lot of it is pretty noisy....But what is noise? As loosely defined a genre as EAI is..

Quoting myself from the "is EAI jazz?" thread...jcg wrote: I think the term "jazz" has now become equivalent to "noise". It's so broad, with so many trends and sub-genres and crossovers and whatnot that it means pretty much anything. Which means nothing.
IMO, there's very little connection between Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis (electric period), Wadada Leo Smith or Greg Kelley. Still they are all trumpet players and most people consider them "jazz musicians".
Same goes if you consider Borbetomagus, Zbigniew Karkowski, Rudolf Eb-Er or Daniel Menche. They're typically regarded as "noise artists" but they could'nt be more different.
No wait Borbeto is a free jazz unit, right?... And Greg Kelley's latest LP is on No Fun Prod so then what?
Hmmm... now I'm confused...
How about starting an "is EAI noise?" thread? This would be equally ridiculous...

Re: is EAI noise?
noise not necessary have to be noisy,ie Weather Sky to me is a very good noise album, the tokyo's onkyo, the berlin's reductionism & the london's silence are all noise basically.Dohol wrote:A lot of it is pretty noisy....But what is noise? As loosely defined a genre as EAI is..
Re: is EAI noise?
I can't see why not some EAI recordings could be considered as noise either.
I have the opinion that there is some music that can be catalogued on multiple genres.

Re: is EAI noise?
in fact MOST music have multiple genres, and genre mean very little to music creative process & listening process.the bird wrote:I can't see why not some EAI recordings could be considered as noise either.

what i learn about "what is noise" in this few years are, noise is a musical term too, nothing negative about this term.
Re: is EAI noise?
might as well as the question 'is eai improvisation'.
as i said in the other thread, long-form attempts at definition have remained fruitless and not a little irritating. defining anything by one of its aspects is just a sure way to aggravate people whose greater interests lie in other aspects. certainly won't help people understand the music any better, so why bother?

Re: is EAI noise?
Actually i'd say that EAI has more in common with noise than it does with jazz these days.
Re: is EAI noise?
yeah, if you really needed to parse it into its subcomponents, both noise and classical are bigger direct influences than jazz, I'd say.
Re: is EAI noise?
i think EAI is aesthetically closer to noise and classical, but genetically closer to jazz.

good call & good song grisha

Although I do think whatever discussion is fruitful, in the long run.
One reads (read) a lot that reviewing eai is difficult because we lack of an adequate vocabulary, etc., so I guess any attempt at verbalization is fruitful from a review/theory-perspective. nonetheless for me, it's kinda simple: purely on an intuition-level, albums like Salmon Run or field recordings are "eai" as well, because I tend to link eai mostly with 'texture'. noise would have more to do with strong/negative/harsh emotions and a mostly electronic instrumentarium, jazz is something I link with a certain kind of 'freedom'. Of course every 'genre' has elements from the other, and confusion arises because the noun 'Noise' means something different than the adjective 'noisy'... jazz/jazzy, eai/eai-ish, grunge/grungy, pop/poppy, etc. (The same goes for 'music' and 'musical' btw - e.g. nature sounds can have musical qualities but they are not 'music' strictu sensu.)
A problem with the above is that I don't like the distinction emotional-rational (like in my "it's simple on an inuition-level")...
More fruitfull would be the distinction 'private'-'public', wherein the above distinction between eai-jazz-noise is situated on a personal, private ("imho") level, knowing that in the public realm, other definitions are used.
Threads like these originate from the tension that arises between a.o. those two sets of fields (adjective-noun/private-personal).
why bother?
well, why not trim down this forum to merely lists, announcements and the occasional authorative review.

Re: is EAI noise?
my answer is YES to is eai EAI
and on noise:
feedback is noise, most of EAI recording dealing with feedback (and circuit-bending), so EAI is noise.

Re: is EAI noise?
From what I've heard it is more akin to minimalism in the visual arts, which I appreciate on an intellectual level but which doesn't speak to me personally in any meaningful way.
Re: is EAI noise?
Mine sure isn't. There's nothing universally Elecric or Acoustic or Improvised to EAI. It's a terrible name.gohleekwang wrote:my answer is YES to is eai EAI![]()
The only statement of this kind that I will agree with is that EAI is TAOMUD.

Re: is EAI noise?
So, for an extremely basic example, you have a strictly intellectual reaction to Rothko or Rowe? Funny, I tend to respond more immediately to the beauty of both visual and aural arts.
Edit: I was responding to the statement just before the previous one(noj's)...guess I should've quoted...

Re: is EAI noise?
Maybe I'm over-saturated from studying art and listening to music, but I do not have an emotional reaction to Rothko or Rowe. My immediate reaction is all practical, not gut. Maybe I'm the wrong target audience for such artwork. Rothko melts down to a graphic background for type. Rowe, a soundtrack in search of a movie.

Man that song has held up well. I haven't heard that in long time.grisha wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGUsF-Whb1g

I am very sorry to hear that. Can you still taste fruit?
