I hate Death Metal
here's my ultimate death metal list. as a teenager I used to listen to BM more. I didn't really listen to metal for some years, but funny enough it's mostly DM I enjoy now. also a fairly mainstream list I guess.
GORGUTS - OBSCURA
Death - Human, The Sound of Persevereance, Symbolic, Live in LA
Carcass - Necrotism..., Heartwork
Cryptopsy - ...And then you'll beg
Nile - In their darkened shrines, Annihilation of the wicked
Pig Destroyer - Prowler in the Yard
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Altered States of America
Dying Fetus - Stop at nothing
Yakuza - Samsara
Repulsion - Horrified
Suffocation - Pierced from within
Visceral Bleeding - Remnants of Deprivation
Napalm Death - Fear, Emptiness, Despair & Enemy Of The Music Business
Morbid Angel - practically all of them
Entomed - Wolverine blues (haha)
Bolt Thrower - The IVth crusade
Deicide - Once Upon The Cross
proto:
Cryptic Slaughter - Money Talks
D.R.I.

Re: I hate Death Metal
Yakuza are death metal? that's news to me.
Repulsion are arguably grind. Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed are unarguably grind. might as well have included Terrorizer in there, a great album, that one. by Carcass, i prefer Symphonies of Sickness. but Entombed, oblviously the first two. and what about Atheist? a great band. as far as really technical stuff - Demilich.
Death are probably my favourite metal band. checked out their earlier stuff too, relatively recently, loved it. really have been digging some early bands/releases, before it all got all technical and blast beats all then time. Obituary (gonna see them live), Dismember, Possessed, Pestilence, what else? of the newer bands i really dug Sarpantium. Nox, on the more technical side, but as i said i'm not really into all the triggered machine gun drums, and much of the genre has been just about that lately, and not about good songs. there is a new album i really dug by Hail Of Bullets, ...Of Frost And War, with Martin van Drunen on vocals, sort of super group.
i can't believe i haven't checked any Bolt Thrower yet.

I'd second Atheist... they are my favorite "Death Jazz" band, haha.
Re: I hate Death Metal
everything they did up to and including For Victory is great. Warmaster is a good starting pointgrisha wrote: i can't believe i haven't checked any Bolt Thrower yet.
Re: I hate Death Metal
Definitely Cryptopsy's None So Vile and Gorguts from Wisdom to Hate, and I love the early Sepultura Records (Arise, Chaos AD, Schizophrenia) and even Roots, if those count.
Re: I hate Death Metal
Here are a couple of interesting things that are more recent:
Negativa (Canada)-
This is the current project of the two main guys from Gorguts.
They just added a female vocalist to the group--and apparently she will be singing, not grunting, growling, or retching. Should be interesting...
Portal (Australia)-
This band is sort of Noise/BM-not super-technical, but I really dig it. Their newest project Outre, has some weird, pseudo-Masonic artwork. These guys have their own thing going on.
Ulcerate (New Zealand)-
Blazing, post-Gorguts Technical Death Metal. Really strong stuff.

No Autopsy? To me, Autopsy are everything death metal should be.

Re: I hate Death Metal
yeah I don't really care for the death-grind distinction. agreed on Death grisha.
have to admitt, I'm not familiar with Autopsy.
I have that Negative mini-cd, eagerly waiting for the full album...
and well, Atheist, I think they're overrated a bit. Not bad or so, just not...

Let's face it. Having heard one Bolt Thrower album is having heard them all.carlos wrote:everything they did up to and including For Victory is great. Warmaster is a good starting pointgrisha wrote: i can't believe i haven't checked any Bolt Thrower yet.
Used to listen to a lot of DM, everything from Vader to Sinister, and Chemical Breath to Death. That more or less stopped when I got into BM about 15 years ago.
Still worth, I think:
Autopsy: everything (Shitfun is a little bit harder to cope with). I agree with Sound Plague. Autopsy IS death metal. Essential!!! Also try to get every single or EP from them. Fiend for Blood!!
At The Gates - about everything: anyone? The Red in The Sky is Ours is classic stuff
Darkthrone - Soulside Journey
Blasphemy - Gods of War / Blood upon the Altar
Carcass - Necrotism.., Symphonies... and Reek Of Putrefaction (last is more grind)
Kataklysm - Sorcery + Temple of Knowledge (quite disturbing)
Morbid Angel - every album from A to D (although Domination is less good. The point with this band imo is that, the less DM they sound, the better they are. Their demo Abominations of Dessolation sounds more thrash than DM, and is more interesting, I think)
Rebellion (in little bits)
Deicide - Amon: feasting the beast (demo from the time they listen to the name Amon. Same comment as with Morbid Angel)
Possessed - Seven Churses
Sarcofago
The Ravenous - Assembled in Blasphemy
Viking Crown - Banished Rhythmic Hate (not pure DM)
Death - everything up to and including Individual Thought Pattern. Symbolic sucks!
Obituary - sucks since the release of World Demise. Especially like Cause Of Death and The End Complete
Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream, Indecent & Obscene, Pieces EP
Merciless - The Awakening (DM with Thrash and BM influence. First DSP release!! Later rereleased by Osmose)
My Dying Bride - As the Flower Withers (as much DM as it wears doom)
Hellhammer (of course a big influence on DM)
Tyrant - new hellhammer-influenced band - awesome!!
Sepultura only was DM on Morbid Visions and Bestial Devestation, which belongs to my earliest and best metal memories
Grave - Into the Grave (only this one)
Angelcorpse - about everything!!! / Revenge (quite BM influenced)
Never understood all the fuzz about Nile (gimmick!)
Re: I hate Death Metal
new retro-dm from Sweden well worth checking out: Death Breath (w/ Nicke from Entombed/Hellacopters) and Repugnant.
I can't really see why people have to compare death and black metal - death metal is about posing + musical brutality, black metal is only about posing.

in my early teens i was a heavy metal/DM/grind freak. and half of this list was indeed essential to me as well.White Heat wrote:Let's face it. and i still listen to at the gates, my dying bride and carcass a lot.
fave ATG : the red in the sky is ours, with fear i kiss.., and terminal spirit disease
being 14 and seeing at the gates, gorefest, obituary, anathema, ... was quite something for me
i'll add
Unleashed - where no life dwells
Master - s/t
Gorefest - false
Entombed - left hand path
Exoto - carnival of souls (haha)
also
the first 2 or 3 Death is just the beginning compilations on nuclear blast were influential for me personally as well.

Re: I hate Death Metal
that's funny. Think you have listened to the wrong stuff... Although I do agree (in retrospect) that 98% of BM is about pose. But, that's how things go... BM was definitely about musical renewal!David wrote:new retro-dm from Sweden well worth checking out: Death Breath (w/ Nicke from Entombed/Hellacopters) and Repugnant.
I can't really see why people have to compare death and black metal - death metal is about posing + musical brutality, black metal is only about posing.
Jørgen Munkeby from Shining said some interesting things about BM in relation to John Coltrane. An exerpt from the article we did:
"He was constantly searching for new things. The paradox is that, if you want to be like Coltrane you shouldn't do what he did more than forty years ago. That is also what happened to black metal basically. When it was born it was about a new thing, provocative and against established things, and about renewing music. Today most bands are looking backwards to what it was 20 years ago. Enslaved for example is trying to expand. People that created black metal, would be creating something completely different if they would be young now."
Dodheimsgard's Svein Egil Hatlevik aka Magic Logic in 2000 said to us that his idea about the band playing in women's clothes and fluorescent paint was to re-demonise the visuals of black metal. He said that if you go to a fancy dress party in a policeman's uniform, everybody would understand what you're trying to look like. He thought the same counted for the black metal uniform. Polish artist Viktor Witkowski, eight years ago wrote that that "warriors, evilness, black metal are branded trademarks like Schiesser, Calvin Klein or Benetton". Munkeby understands completely what they talk about, as the black metal musicians "didn't paint themselves to fit in or to be part of society. Now they've become part of it. Our most famous writer Hendrik Ibsen, says that a 'truth is only a truth for twenty years'. It becomes an old untrue thing afterwards. And then people celebrate it."

Very Nice list white heat! I'd back up most of that. I think "shitfun's" major hurdle is the title and cover art. I remember purchasing it from a chain store a few years ago. The girl at the counter asks "is that poo in his mouth" to which I nodded gravely. She avoided eye contact for the rest of the transaction.White Heat wrote: Still worth, I think:

It may seem anathema to some, but I'd add Cannibal Corpse's "Butchered at Birth" and "Tombs of the Mutilated" to the list. Both very good albums imo. More recently I've enjoyed Lost Soul and Mithras, however the triggered drums in the latter puts me off a bit.
Re: I hate Death Metal
another two classic albums are
Ripping Corpse - Dreaming With The Dead
Incubus - Serpent Temptation
another good band were The Crown.
the latest Obituary is not bad, actually. it's not on par with their first three, naturally, but it definitely doesn't suck.

Re: I hate Death Metal
Haven't seen mention of Immolation, or else I missed it. Dawn of Possession, Here in After, Close to A World Below, and Unholy Cult are what I have, they're pretty great.
Most impressive new band to me is Defeated Sanity, definitely in the 'brutal' realm. Wormed is also awesome in that regard. Malignancy, Ingurgitating Oblivion, Mucopus, Resection, also.
Oh yeah, Internal Suffering is ridiculous too.

since i've always been a bit more to the grindcore side of things i must point out that my alltime favorites brutal truth are missing from the lists - extreme conditions... and sounds from the animal kingdom are two very different but equally groundbreaking album.

Autopsy's Shitfun has some of the best cover art of all time, right up there with Royal Trux - Sweet Sixteen.
I'm not a huge DM person but I like me some Autopsy, Deicide, Nile, Entombed & Necrophagist (obscene solos)
