Possible pairings

Post by faster »

Some time ago a thread got derailed by a convo about "possible Erstwhile pairings." It was interesting. How about ALL possible pairings people would like to hear? (ie. not just Erstwhile).

I'll say I'd like to hear James Coleman, Ami Yoshida, and Andrew Lafkas.

Weasel Walter, Greg Kelley and Kevin Drumm

though Walter would have to play something other than drums.

edit: I've said this before but Greg Kelley and John Weise. I think it could either be one of the most beautiful or horrible things ever recorded, but i'm not sure on which.

i've already mentioned christian fennesz and martin brandlmayr (or another drummer) in another thread.

also christina carter and taku sugimoto from 1999.

i'll think of some more.

fennesz saw kevin's recent show in paris (I think christian's the one who told me about this, the last few weeks have been a bit of a blur, sorry), and described it as something like "gentle guitar drones". no smoke machine, no strobe lights. maybe mr. drumm has confounded us again, before he could be easily pigeonholed.

this is one problem with putting together pairings (which I run into in real life occasionally), artists often move in unexpected directions, sometimes far enough away that ideas don't work anymore.

interesting. but i'd heard from others about recent sets being some of his most brutal. i'd bet that was more a case of adapting to a specific night's situation than a continued trend for mr. drumm. not that that makes your point any less valid.

here's another off the top of the dome: gutzeit/ottavi/tilbury.

I'd like to pair the guys who made the Berg decapitation video with the current US administration, in one small locked room.

I'm about ready to sign you up for the revolution, Jon, as you seem to go more left every day. :D

Possible pairings? One pissed off Jon Abbey (preferably after a bad Erstwhile recording session) versus Paul Wolfowitz. I'll pay 100 bucks to watch that one.

Other pairings? Sachiko M at 380 decibels versus Osama bin Laden.
Kevin Drumm at 600 decibels versus Dick Cheney.

A month or so ago, I'd have paid to see Jon Abbey vs. the CD pressing plant guys.

well, these seem to be increasingly desperate times.

Bill, I saw that you're doing one of those long DJ sets soon. I'm actually doing another one in December, in the Experimental Intermedia festival again. the first one was December 2000, and I got Phill to let me do another eight hours, just with material from the last four years, mr. bobuffs will be assisting me. Phill's a big fan of this music these days, he was at three nights of shows in Berlin, and the Rowe/Fennesz madhouse at Tonic the other night.

Cool. My set went really well and got a lot of interest (as well as bewildered expressions from not a few audience members). Despite some glitches and problems with equipment and security people, I was quite pleased. And I played a lot of Erstwhile stuff (probably 40%). A real ear-opening experience for a lot of people, and many stayed for the entire six hours, doing their homework and such at the back of the room. Glad to hear Niblock is getting on board with alot of this music. This was the announcement from Choi Joon-yong of the Seoul Frequency Group and Astronoise about the event:

Hopefully it wouldn't sound like the last track on Neurosis' "Enemy of the Sun". It only mars what is otherwise a perfect record of music, way too hippie for something that oughtn't be.

the Muller/Dieb13/Jason Kahn disc isn't very exciting as I recall. this game is much harder than it seems.

we did this once, but with kyle bruckmann on oboe. and weasel *was* on drums. i liked it. though next time i'd be amplified and kyle would be on moog.

Dean Roberts/Tim Barnes/Werner Dafeldecker/Markus Schmickler, covering Eno's "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy", with the BSC filling out the role played by the Portsmouth Sinfonia.
